MLB 2024: Bold Predictions for the New York Mets – Senga’s Rise and Pitching Prospects
MLB Opening Day is here, and with it comes a flurry of predictions. These range from the obvious to the outlandish. We’ll focus on realistic, yet optimistic, forecasts for the 2024 New York Mets, avoiding pure ‘engagement bait’ and concentrating on plausible outcomes.
The Confidence of Kodai Senga
It’s easy to forget just how dominant Kodai Senga was in 2023. He wasn’t just a good pitcher; he was one of the National League’s best. Even a compromised version of himself earned him consideration for crucial playoff starts in 2024. Before a hamstring injury derailed his season, Senga was on track for an All-Star appearance, boasting a sub-2.00 ERA through June. Remarkably, this performance came despite feeling mechanically off for the first two months. Now, he feels different.
The right-hander exudes confidence, and his spring training performance backs it up. He consistently hit 99 mph with his fastball, slicing through opposing lineups. While baseball is a game of chance – a well-placed groundball or an errant throw can change everything – if Senga remains healthy, a trip to the All-Star game in Philadelphia this July is well within reach.
Power in the Lineup: A Shifting Landscape
Last year, Pete Alonso, Francisco Lindor, and Starling Marte became the first Mets trio to each hit 30 home runs in a single season. However, Alonso’s move to the AL East and Lindor’s recovery from hamate surgery – which could initially impact his power – create a shift in the offensive dynamic. While the Mets have added players with 30-homer potential, the likelihood of those players remaining healthy and playing 150+ games is less certain.
The Pitching Rotation: Beyond Peralta and McLean
The Mets will likely carry six or seven starting pitchers on Opening Day. While Freddy Peralta and Nolan McLean are expected to be key contributors, the question remains: who will be the fourth reliable starter in a potential postseason series?
Currently, the answer isn’t clear. David Peterson, Clay Holmes, and Sean Manaea are options, but Christian Scott or Jonah Tong – both highly-regarded pitching prospects – have a strong chance of emerging by September. Both Scott and Tong possess the high-level, swing-and-miss stuff needed to excel in the postseason, offering a more promising outlook than the current alternatives.
The Mets’ success in 2024 hinges not only on the established stars but also on the development and performance of these young pitching prospects. Keep an eye on Scott and Tong – they could be the difference-makers in a playoff push.
