Tennis sensation Coco Gauff has addressed online criticism regarding her natural hair following a photoshoot for fashion house Miu Miu, a brand that has collaborated on some of Gauff’s tennis apparel in recent years. The 22-year-old, two-time Grand Slam champion, delivered a powerful message of self-acceptance and empowerment.
Responding to Criticism with Grace and Strength
Gauff shared a video on April 9th, addressing the negative comments she received after posting photos from the Miu Miu’s Vivant bag campaign on April 2nd. The shoot, she explained, was intentionally styled to reflect a minimalist aesthetic, and for her, that meant embracing her 4C hair texture – a classification based on hair tightness, curl shape, and density – in its natural state. The photoshoot took place in her parents’ backyard with her social media manager.
Unfortunately, some commenters labeled her hair as “unkempt” and drew unfavorable comparisons to hairstyles from the civil rights era. Gauff eloquently responded, emphasizing the connection between her hair choices and her athletic lifestyle.
The Practicality and Pride of Natural Hair for Athletes
Gauff’s perspective aligns with a growing conversation within the athletic community about the challenges Black women face with hair maintenance. As highlighted in a report by The Athletic, Black British footballers have discussed the extensive planning and time commitment required for elaborate hairstyles, often clashing with their demanding schedules.
“I personally don’t like to slick back my hair super-sleek, because it does damage my hair,” Gauff explained. “I do play tennis, so most of the time when I’m wearing it in a bun, I choose to allow my hair to be and to present in its 4C self, because I do have 4C hair. … I don’t want it to be super-slicked-back, because it’s just not good for my hair.”
A Message of Empowerment for Young Black Girls
Gauff’s message extended beyond her personal experience, offering encouragement to young Black girls. “To all the young Black girls out there who have kinky hair like me, do what you want to do with your hair,” she declared. She passionately advocated for the freedom to express oneself through all facets of Black hair – whether it’s straightened, permed, worn in an afro, braids, cornrows, or simply styled in a bun.
Despite the criticism momentarily “knocking a diva down,” Gauff quickly “got back up,” reaffirming the beauty of Black women and the inherent beauty of kinky, Afro-textured hair.
Looking Ahead: Gauff’s 2024 Season
Currently ranked No. 3 in the world, Coco Gauff is preparing for a crucial phase of her 2024 season. She enjoyed a successful 2023, reaching the finals of the Madrid Open, Italian Open, and French Open, ultimately winning the French Open against Aryna Sabalenka. Her next challenge begins on April 20th in Madrid.
