The Formula 1 paddock is currently buzzing with speculation regarding the long-term future of Max Verstappen. While the four-time world champion remains the face of Red Bull Racing, the team’s recent inconsistency has sparked a firestorm of rumors. From potential moves to McLaren to the evergreen link with Mercedes, everyone is asking: Is Max looking for the exit?
Former Haas team principal Guenther Steiner believes the answer is more complex than a simple transfer. According to Steiner, Verstappen might now be harboring deep regrets about a decision made years ago—specifically, the choice to stay with Red Bull when the door to Mercedes was wide open.
The “What If” Scenario: Verstappen vs. George Russell
Speaking on the Red Flags Podcast, Steiner revealed a fascinating insight into the timing of F1 driver contracts. He suggests that during the period when Formula 1‘s powerhouse Mercedes was negotiating George Russell’s contract, Verstappen was a viable alternative.
However, the Dutchman was reportedly hesitant. Steiner notes that Max was uncertain about the future and chose to bet on the new technical regulations with Red Bull. In hindsight, Steiner argues that this gamble may have cost him a seamless transition to the Brackley-based team.
“I think Max was uncertain about what the future held, and in the end, the opportunity slipped by… now it’s not just a little late, it’s simply too late,” Steiner remarked.
Why a Move to Mercedes is Now Unrealistic
While fans love the idea of a “super-team,” Steiner believes that the strategic balance at Mercedes makes a Verstappen signing nearly impossible today. There are three primary reasons why the Silver Arrows are likely to pass on the Dutchman:

- The Financial and Cultural Cost: Max comes with a massive price tag and a dominant personality that might clash with the established Mercedes team culture.
Steiner is convinced that Toto Wolff is too calculated to risk unsettling his current lineup just to bring in a high-cost driver who might not fit the team’s operational philosophy.
The Verdict: Is Max Staying at Red Bull?
Despite the swirling rumors and the lure of rival teams, Steiner doesn’t believe we will see Max Verstappen in a different suit anytime soon. Instead, he views the current situation as a wake-up call for Red Bull Racing.
In Steiner’s view, the responsibility now shifts entirely to the Milton Keynes squad. To keep their star driver happy and competitive, Red Bull must deliver a car that can consistently fight for victory at the front of the grid. Until then, the “Mercedes regret” may continue to linger in the background of the F1 circus.
