Matas Vokietaitis Recognized as College Basketball Standout

LUBBOCK – The National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) recently announced its all-district teams, and Texas Tech Red Raiders’ Matas Vokietaitis has earned significant recognition. Alongside teammates Christian Anderson and JT Toppin, Vokietaitis’s performance has been pivotal for the team, culminating in a successful season and a berth in the NCAA Tournament.

All-District Accolades

Christian Anderson and JT Toppin were named to the Gulf District First Team, while Head Coach Grant McCasland was selected as the Gulf District Co-Coach of the Year. The Gulf District encompasses Division I programs in Texas and Louisiana, making this honor particularly prestigious.

Joining Vokietaitis, Anderson, and Toppin on the First Team are Rashaun Agee (Texas A&M), Cameron Carr (Baylor), Kingston Flemings (Houston), Boopie Miller (SMU), David Punch (TCU), Emanuel Sharp (Houston), Dailyn Swain (Texas), and Keon Thompson (SFA). The Second Team includes Rowan Brumbaugh (Tulane), Chris Cenac (Houston), DJ Hall (Texas State), Larry Johnson (McNeese), Po’Boigh King (Sam Houston), Lateef Patrick (SFA), Jaron Pierre (SMU), Joseph Tugler (Houston), and Tounde Yessoufou (Baylor).

Vokietaitis’s Impact and Team Success

Matas Vokietaitis has quickly become a key player for the Red Raiders, demonstrating impressive skill and contributing significantly to the team’s offensive prowess. His inclusion in the All-District selection highlights his growing reputation as a rising star in college basketball.

Anderson and Toppin: Leading the Charge

Christian Anderson has set a new Texas Tech single-season record with 236 assists, leading the Big 12 with an impressive 7.6 assists per game. He also boasts an average of 18.9 points per game and has 105 made 3-pointers this season. JT Toppin, before a season-ending injury, averaged 21.8 points and 10.8 rebounds in 25 games, recording 16 double-doubles.

McCasland’s Coaching Excellence

Grant McCasland has made history as the first Texas Tech coach to lead the program to the NCAA Tournament in his first three seasons. The Red Raiders have achieved a 22-10 record this season, including notable victories over Top 5 and Top 10 opponents. His overall NCAA career record stands at an impressive 284-119.

NCAA Tournament Bound

Texas Tech is seeded No. 5 in the Midwest Region and will face No. 12 Akron in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday at 11:40 a.m. (CST) in Tampa, Florida. This marks another exciting chapter for the Red Raiders and their talented roster, including the promising Matas Vokietaitis.
