Márton Fucsovics Shocks World No. 5 Lorenzo Musetti at BNP Paribas Open
In a stunning display of tennis prowess, Márton Fucsovics secured a significant victory against World No. 5 Lorenzo Musetti at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells on Friday. Fucsovics triumphed with a score of 7-5, 6-1, marking only his second career win against a Top 5 opponent and his first in nearly six years.
Musetti was returning to competition after being forced to retire from his Australian Open quarter-final match against Novak Djokovic due to a psoas muscle injury. Despite leading by two sets, the injury hampered his performance in California, where he committed 26 unforced errors and appeared rusty. Fucsovics capitalized on Musetti’s struggles, advancing to the third round in Indian Wells for the second time in his career.
Fucsovics’ Upset Victory
This win significantly improves Fucsovics’ record against Top 10 opponents to 4-35, according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index. His previous Top 5 victory came against Daniil Medvedev at Roland Garros in 2020, but this marks his first Top 10 win on a hard court. The No. 56 ranked player will next face Arthur Fils, who advanced after Croatian qualifier Dino Prizmic retired while Fils was leading 6-2, 3-2.
Shelton Stages Comeback
In another exciting match, eighth seed Ben Shelton narrowly avoided an early exit, staging a remarkable comeback to defeat Reilly Opelka 6-7(3), 7-6(4), 6-3. Shelton faced a challenging moment, trailing 4/5 in the second-set tie-break, but Opelka faltered, handing Shelton a crucial lifeline.
Despite a fall while serving for the match, Shelton recovered and secured the win after a grueling two hours and 13 minutes. He admitted to not feeling at 100% but was pleased to compete and win against a tough opponent. Shelton will next face Learner Tien, whom he has lost to once previously.
Shelton stated, “I think every week we go through something, maybe not at full 100 per cent. Just happy to be through to the next round, that I went out there and gave myself a chance to compete and get a win against a tough opponent, especially on a court like this.”
