Marquette University Women’s Basketball: A Season of Resilience
The Marquette University women’s basketball team entered the season with a unique advantage – returning every player from the previous year’s roster. The adversity deepened on February 1st when point guard Olivia Porter, who followed Coach Consuegra from Charlotte to Marquette, suffered a knee injury, ending her season prematurely. Despite these significant setbacks, the Golden Eagles demonstrated remarkable resilience.
Strong Conference Performance
Marquette (18-11, 12-8 Big East) persevered, finishing tied for third in the highly competitive Big East Conference. Their strong performance earned them the No. 4 seed in the upcoming league tournament. They will face fifth-seeded Creighton (15-14, 11-9) on March 7th at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut. This matchup promises to be a thrilling contest.
All-Conference Recognition
The team’s individual talents were also recognized, with Marquette receiving a historic three players named to the Big East all-conference teams. Juniors Skylar Forbes and Halle Vice earned First Team honors, while fifth-year player Lee Volker secured a spot on the Second Team.
Player Highlights:
- Skylar Forbes: Averaged 15.5 points per game (fourth in the league) and led the Big East in blocks for the second consecutive year with an impressive 1.81 per game. She was also named to the all-defensive team.
- Halle Vice: Dominated the boards with 10 double-doubles, leading the Big East. She averaged 13.8 points and 8.8 rebounds per game, shooting an outstanding 55.4% from the field (second in the league).
- Lee Volker: Provided crucial scoring off the bench, averaging 12.2 points and connecting on 43.3% of her three-point attempts.
