In the high-stakes world of professional basketball, longevity is often the hardest battle to win. For Marina Mabrey, persistence hasn’t just been a strategy—it has been her calling card. After years of grinding through the league, Mabrey’s dedication has officially paid off with a well-deserved selection as a WNBA All-Star reserve.
Despite a tough 83-75 loss for the Toronto Tempo against the Golden State Valkyries, Mabrey proved exactly why she belongs among the elite, putting up an impressive line of 11 points, six rebounds, and four assists.
A Dream Born in High School
For Mabrey, this achievement is the fulfillment of a lifelong ambition. Reflecting on her journey, the 29-year-old guard recalled the innocence of her early goals: “When I was in high school I was like, ‘I want to be in the WNBA and I want to be a WNBA all-star.’ I had no idea how hard it was,” she admitted with a smile.
The road to the WNBA is notoriously grueling. Mabrey describes a cycle of constant challenge, accountability, and the mental toll of switching teams and adapting to new teammates. However, her secret weapon was a relentless belief in herself that never wavered, even when the odds were stacked against her.
Defying the Draft Narrative
Mabrey’s career trajectory is a masterclass in perseverance. Selected 19th overall in the second round of the 2019 WNBA draft by the Los Angeles Sparks, she wasn’t the “blue-chip” prospect expected to dominate. Her journey took her through several cities, including:

Much of Mabrey’s physical and mental resilience can be traced back to her parents, Patti and Roy Mabrey, both competitive triathletes. They instilled in her a professional approach to athleticism long before she hit the big leagues.
