Leylah Fernandez and Jessica Pegula to Battle in Miami Open Third Round
The stage is set for a compelling showdown at the Miami Open as Jessica Pegula and Leylah Fernandez will meet for the fourth time in their burgeoning rivalry. Both players secured their places in the third round through contrasting victories on Saturday, promising a thrilling encounter.
Pegula Advances After Jones Retires
Jessica Pegula progressed to the third round after Francesca Jones was forced to retire due to illness, trailing 6-1, 3-0. Jones, who had previously revealed she was battling illness during her first-round win against Venus Williams, received medical attention but was unable to continue. Despite a brief resurgence in the second set, Jones couldn’t overcome Pegula’s dominance.
Fernandez Overcomes Selekhmeteva in Three Sets
Leylah Fernandez faced a tougher challenge, battling to a 7-6(1), 3-6, 6-1 victory over Oksana Selekhmeteva in a match lasting 2 hours and 25 minutes. Selekhmeteva, a rising star who reached the third round of the Australian Open and the quarterfinals in Austin, proved a formidable opponent with her unique double-handed backhand slice and powerful forehand.
A Rivalry Defined by Close Contests
This upcoming match marks the fourth edition of the Pegula-Fernandez rivalry. Their first encounter took place in the second round of the 2024 Miami Open, with Pegula emerging victorious 7-5, 6-4. Since then, their matches have been incredibly competitive.
Pegula secured a hard-fought 7-5, 6-7(1), 7-6(3) win in the 2024 Cincinnati quarterfinals, needing over three hours and converting her fifth match point after relinquishing a 4-0 lead in the second set. Fernandez finally claimed her first win in the series at the 2025 Washington semifinals, triumphing 6-3, 1-6, 7-5 and ultimately winning her first WTA 500 title.
Pegula’s Strong Form vs. Fernandez’s Search for Consistency
Currently, Jessica Pegula appears to be in excellent form, having reached at least the quarterfinals of her past eight tournaments and boasting a 17-3 record in 2026, including a title win in Dubai. Fernandez, however, has been searching for consistency, with a 2-7 record earlier in the year before finding her stride this week.
“Leylah and I always seem to have really intense matches,” Pegula commented. “We all know that when she gets hot and she’s playing confidently it can be really tricky, especially against a lefty. I know she probably likes the fast courts as well with her serve.”
The Miami Open promises another captivating chapter in this exciting rivalry. Fans can anticipate a fiercely contested match between two of the sport’s rising stars. For more information on the Miami Open, visit the official Miami Open website.
