Allen’s most significant contribution came during the preseason. His strong performance effectively ended the Lions’ experiment with Hendon Hooker. Allen completed an impressive 79.5% of his passes for 401 yards and five touchdowns, with only two interceptions. He demonstrated a strong grasp of the Lions’ timing-based passing game, giving the coaching staff confidence in his ability to step in for Goff if needed. Head Coach Dan Campbell expressed his comfort with Allen last August, stating, “I feel very comfortable with him.”
Goff’s Reliability and the Need for a Backup
Fortunately for the Lions, Goff’s durability continued throughout the season, and Allen wasn’t required to take the field. Goff hasn’t missed a start since Week 17 of the 2021 season, a testament to his reliability. The Lions are undoubtedly hoping this streak continues. However, with Allen now in Buffalo, the team will need to find a capable replacement should Goff become unavailable.
