Klay Thompson Trade Rumors: Will the Mavericks Move the Veteran Sharpshooter?

Klay Thompson’s Future with the Mavericks in Question

The Dallas Mavericks are undergoing a significant transformation, and the future of veteran guard Klay Thompson is now uncertain. Following the blockbuster trade that sent Anthony Davis to the Washington Wizards, reports suggest Thompson could be the next player to depart Dallas.

The Mavericks’ Rebuild Around Cooper Flagg

The Mavericks fully committed to a rebuild centered around rookie Cooper Flagg on Tuesday, initiating a massive eight-player trade. Davis, along with Jaden Hardy, D’Angelo Russell, and Dante Exum, are heading to Washington in exchange for Khris Middleton, AJ Johnson, Malaki Branham, and Marvin Bagley III. Dallas also secured two first-round picks and three second-rounders in the deal, signaling a clear shift in direction.

Thompson’s Role and Performance This Season

Thompson, now in his second season with the Mavericks, has embraced a bench role, providing valuable minutes for head coach Jason Kidd. Despite only starting eight of his 46 games this season, the four-time NBA champion is averaging 11.6 points on 38.7% shooting, along with 2.5 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 22.2 minutes per game. He continues to be a threat from beyond the arc, knocking down 2.9 three-pointers per game at a 37.9% clip. You can find more stats and analysis on NBA.com.

Trade Rumors and Potential Destinations

According to Grant Afseth of Dallas Hoops Journal, Thompson is one of two “main remaining trade candidates” for the Mavericks. At 35 years old, Thompson may no longer fit the Mavericks’ long-term timeline focused on Flagg’s development. However, his experience and proven ability to score make him an attractive asset for teams in “win-now” mode.

Dallas is likely to seek future assets in exchange for Thompson. He is currently in the second year of a three-year deal, owed $17.5 million next season, and will become an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2027.

Gafford’s Situation

Big man Daniel Gafford is also potentially on the move. While the Atlanta Hawks were previously linked as a possible destination, their recent acquisition of Jock Landale from the Utah Jazz may alter those plans. Like Thompson, Gafford’s future with the Mavericks remains uncertain as the trade deadline approaches.
