Keaton Wagler’s Parents: A Legacy of Basketball
As the Illinois Fighting Illini men’s basketball team aims for a National Championship—and a return to the title game for the first time since 2005—all eyes are on freshman guard Keaton Wagler. The 6’6” standout from Shawnee, Kansas, comes from a family deeply rooted in the sport, a fact that has undoubtedly contributed to his success. Basketball, as Keaton himself says, “has a deep meaning in our family.”
How Keaton’s Parents Met
The story of Keaton’s parents, Logan and Jennifer Wagler, is a testament to the power of basketball. They first met while playing for Hutchinson Community College in Kansas. Height clearly runs in the family – Jennifer stands at 5’11” and Logan towers at 6’8”. Their love story began on the court, and now they’re watching their son shine on the national stage.
Jennifer Wagler: From the Court to the Classroom
Like her son, Jennifer was a dedicated basketball player. Today, she channels her passion and dedication into her career as a fifth-grade teacher. Jennifer and Logan are proud parents to three children: daughter Brooklyn, and sons Landon and Keaton. She fondly recalls Keaton’s early fascination with the game, remembering him asking, “‘Is there a job where you can just shoot baskets?’”.
Logan Wagler: A Basketball Family Tradition
Logan’s connection to basketball extends even further back. His grandfather, Al Wagler, played for Hutchinson Community College (HCC) from 1939 to 1940 and served as the men’s basketball tournament director. Logan’s father, William “Bill” Wagler, also competed for HCC from 1966 to 1967. Logan and his brother Lucas continued the family tradition, playing for the Kansas school, with Logan finishing his collegiate career at Rockhurst University in Kansas City. The legacy continued with Logan’s son, Landon (Keaton’s brother), becoming the fourth generation to play basketball for HCC.
Currently, Logan serves as the director of parks and recreation for the city of Lenexa, Kansas. He previously worked at the Lenexa Rec Center, where he organized competitive pickup games, often including coaches and former college players. He even included his sons in these high-level scrimmages.
A Supportive Family
Logan emphasizes that he and Jennifer have always encouraged their children to pursue their own paths, rather than feeling pressured to uphold a family legacy. “My wife and I have never expected our kids to worry about being a part of a legacy, but rather finding their own path,” he stated. However, it’s clear that Keaton’s path has led him to embrace the family’s basketball heritage.
Keaton maintains a close relationship with his mother, sharing daily updates via Snapchat. “I talk to my mom every day on Snapchat,” Keaton shared with The Kansas City Star. “I think that’s just an easy way for us to check in.”
Looking Ahead
With speculation surrounding Keaton’s potential entry into the NBA Draft, Logan and Jennifer are taking things in stride. “As parents, honestly, it’s been really hard to process,” Logan admitted. “This has happened so fast and been so unexpected… We’re just trying to enjoy the season before we get ahead of ourselves.”
The Wagler family’s story is a heartwarming example of how a shared passion for basketball can create a lasting legacy and provide unwavering support for a rising star. You can find more information about college basketball at NCAA.com.
