Jose Altuve Gets a Day Off as Astros Struggle

Jose Altuve Receives Rest Amidst Astros’ Slow Start

The Houston Astros are navigating a challenging start to the 2026 season, currently holding the last position in the American League West division. More than halfway through April, the team’s road performance has been particularly concerning, with only one win in ten away games at Daikin Field. Following a much-needed victory against the Colorado Rockies upon their return home after an eight-game losing streak, Astros manager Joe Espada has made a strategic decision regarding the lineup.

Espada has opted to rest designated hitter Jose Altuve for Wednesday’s contest against the Rockies. This comes after Altuve started the first 18 games of the season, signaling a proactive move to manage the veteran’s workload. (h/t Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle)

Altuve’s Performance and Impact

In 66 at-bats this season, Altuve is maintaining a .288 batting average, with 19 hits, 6 RBIs, and 2 home runs. The two-time World Series champion boasts a remarkable career .303 batting average over his 16 seasons with the Astros, solidifying his status as one of Houston’s most consistent and valuable hitters. His continued presence is vital for the team’s success.

Álvarez Steps In

Yordan Álvarez will take Altuve’s place in the lineup against the Rockies, aiming to build upon his impressive start to the season. Álvarez, the 2022 ALCS Most Valuable Player, currently holds a .317 batting average with 19 hits, 16 RBIs, and 6 home runs in 60 at-bats.

Depth Concerns and Injury Bug

Depth at second base remains a concern, with Altuve and utility player Isaac Paredes being the primary options. Paredes, who joined the Astros last season, is currently batting .234 with 11 hits and 6 RBIs. The Astros are also grappling with a series of injuries, having placed shortstop Jeremy Peña and pitchers Hunter Brown, Christian Javier, and Tatsuya Imai on the injured list this past Monday.

Espada’s decision to rest Altuve is a precautionary measure, designed to prevent further strain on the 35-year-old amidst the team’s struggles and mounting injury concerns. The Astros have found some success at Daikin Park, winning six of eight home games, and will play five more at home before a short series against the Baltimore Orioles next week.

Altuve’s Contract and Future

Altuve is in the second year of a five-year, $125 million contract signed in February of last year. The 2017 American League MVP continues to demonstrate his ability to perform at a high level, offering hope that he can lead the Astros back to championship contention.
