Joey Bosa to the 49ers? Exploring the Possibility in NFL Free Agency

As the NFL offseason heats up, the San Francisco 49ers are once again linked to veteran defensive end Joey Bosa. Last year, the 49ers explored the possibility of signing Bosa, but were ultimately unsuccessful. This offseason presents a similar scenario, with questions surrounding affordability and team strategy.

49ers’ Free Agency Moves and Prioritizations

General Manager John Lynch recently addressed the team’s free agency decisions, explaining the rationale behind signing wide receiver Mike Evans over Jauan Jennings. Evans was deemed a more “dynamic fit” for the offense, despite the 49ers previously attempting to secure Jennings with a long-term contract. Lynch emphasized that Jennings will find a good home and continue to excel.

The Bosa Reunion: A Family Affair and Financial Considerations

The prospect of reuniting Joey Bosa with his brother, 49ers defensive stalwart Nick Bosa, is a compelling narrative. Lynch acknowledged that signing Joey would undoubtedly please their mother, Cheryl Bosa, who has publicly expressed her desire to see her sons play together. However, the financial implications remain a significant hurdle.

Last season, Bosa signed a one-year deal with the Buffalo Bills for $12.6 million. Given the 49ers’ stated goal of getting younger and faster, and after signing Evans (33 in August), the team’s ability to afford Bosa’s contract is questionable. Bosa will turn 31 in July.

Beyond Bosa: Other 49ers Roster Updates

The 49ers have also added receiver Christian Kirk, who, like Evans, chose the 49ers for the right situation. Lynch expressed excitement about the veteran presence both Evans and Kirk will bring to the receiver room, benefiting receivers coach Leonard Hankerson.

Regarding the NFL Draft, Lynch downplayed the likelihood of drafting another receiver early, citing the current depth chart. Updates on player health were also provided: tight end George Kittle is “hopeful” to return for the season opener, while Nick Bosa is expected to be ready for training camp. Defensive end Mykel Williams is recovering from an ACL tear and his return timeline is less certain.

Offensive Line Competition and Future Plans

The starting left guard position will be a competition between Robert Jones, Connor Colby, and Brett Toth, with Lynch indicating the team may still explore options in the draft.
