Joe Flacco: A Potential Return to Cincinnati?
Veteran quarterback Joe Flacco remains a free agent as the NFL offseason progresses, but a familiar destination could be in the cards. The Cincinnati Bengals continue to express interest in the 41-year-old, who is preparing for his 19th season in the league. While Flacco has publicly stated his desire to compete for a starting position, the shrinking number of available opportunities may lead him back to a backup role – potentially alongside Joe Burrow.
The Bengals have already bolstered their quarterback depth by signing Josh Johnson, a 39-year-old journeyman who completed 34 of 54 passes for 372 yards, one touchdown, and one interception in five games for the Washington Commanders last season. Johnson previously played for the Bengals in 2013. However, according to Paul Dehner Jr. of The Athletic, the Bengals are willing to wait for Flacco. “The moment Flacco says yes, though, Johnson moves aside,” Dehner Jr. wrote. “With this move, the Bengals buy time to wait him out.”
AFC North News: Jaquan Brisker Joins the Steelers
Beyond the quarterback situation, other moves are shaping up across the AFC North. Jaquan Brisker is looking to become a versatile force for the Pittsburgh Steelers after signing a one-year, $5.5 million deal. Brisker envisions himself as a ‘Swiss Army knife’ on defense, capable of playing multiple positions – free safety, strong safety, and even as a ‘dime’ linebacker.
“I just feel excited to be used like a Swiss Army knife,” Brisker said via Steelers.com. Last season with the Chicago Bears, Brisker recorded 93 tackles, eight passes defensed, and one interception. The Steelers also added running back Travis Homer, formerly of the Bears, to their backfield.
NFL Rule Change Proposal: Expanding Draft Trade Flexibility
The Cleveland Browns are proposing a significant change to the NFL’s trade rules. They’ve submitted a proposal to allow teams to trade draft picks up to five seasons in the future, extending the current limit of three seasons. This proposal will be discussed at the upcoming league meetings and requires approval from at least 24 of the 32 teams. This comes amidst a trend of blockbuster trades involving multiple first-round picks, such as the Browns’ acquisition of Deshaun Watson.
The NFL landscape is constantly evolving, with teams actively reshaping their rosters. From potential quarterback reunions to defensive versatility and rule changes, the AFC North and the league as a whole are gearing up for an exciting season. Keep an eye on NFL.com for the latest updates.
