James Hagens Joins Bruins Organization with AHL Tryout

The Boston Bruins are bolstering their future with the signing of forward James Hagens to an Amateur Tryout Agreement (ATO) with the Providence Bruins. General Manager Don Sweeney expressed excitement about the move, stating, “We’re very excited to have James join the Bruins organization and take this next step. James is an important part of our future, and this is a great opportunity for him to get immediate experience at the professional level in Providence and continue his development, while keeping all options open.”

A Promising Career Trajectory

Hagens, 19, was a first-round selection by the Bruins (7th overall) in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft. He will join the Providence Bruins for practice on Tuesday, March 24th, at Amica Mutual Pavilion. This ATO provides a crucial stepping stone for the young forward to acclimate to the professional game.

He also led the team in game-winning goals (6), hat tricks (2), and shots on goal (133). His outstanding performance earned him a spot on the conference’s All-Rookie Team after a stellar 2024-25 season where he tallied 37 points.

USNTDP Standout

Before his collegiate career, Hagens spent two seasons (2022-24) with the United States National Team Development Program (USNTDP), where he established himself as a dominant force. He amassed an incredible 187 points (72 goals and 115 assists) – the fifth-most in program history. You can find more information about the USNTDP and its development programs here.

International Success

Hagens has consistently represented the United States on the international stage, participating in two IIHF World Junior Championships (2025, 2026) and two IIHF U-18 Men’s World Championships (2023, 2024). He has a proven track record of success, securing gold medals at the 2025 World Juniors and the 2023 U-18 tournaments.
