Many hockey players excel at golf, thanks to the similar rotational movements and the precision required when handling a puck or a golf club. But one golfer’s journey from a passionate fan to a PGA Tour competitor is particularly noteworthy. Jake Knapp, a lifelong Anaheim Ducks devotee, is making waves at the Masters this week.

California Roots and a Professional Journey

Hailing from Costa Mesa, California, Jake Knapp turned professional in 2023 after honing his skills on the Korn Ferry Tour. But his story isn’t just about golfing prowess; it’s about a deep-rooted connection to his hometown team. Knapp’s journey took an unexpected turn when he secured a sponsorship with the Anaheim Ducks – a partnership born from a chance encounter and a shared love for the game.

The Unlikely Sponsorship

The story began at Costa Mesa Country Club, where Knapp was paired with Bob Murray, then-GM, and Tim Ryan, team president, of the Anaheim Ducks. Unaware of their positions within the franchise at first, Knapp built a rapport with the two executives over time. This connection blossomed into a unique sponsorship deal in 2020, marking a significant milestone in his career.

As Knapp explains, the sponsorship wasn’t a typical athlete endorsement. It was a genuine connection between a fan and his team. Here’s Jake Knapp discussing how the sponsorship came about.

Representing the Ducks at the Masters

Ahead of the Masters, Knapp will proudly display the Ducks’ logo on his shirt collar and golf bag, a testament to the special relationship. Check out the gear here. The Ducks are also amplifying the excitement with a giveaway – one lucky fan can win Knapp’s signed golf bag by texting “GOLF” to 81883.

The Ducks’ reimagining of their iconic logo for the tournament, featuring crossed irons against a green background, is a delightful nod to Knapp’s golfing journey. See the design here.

From Costa Mesa to the World Stage

Born on May 31, 1994, in Costa Mesa, Knapp’s connection to the Ducks is deeply ingrained. Growing up just 13 miles from Honda Center, the Ducks’ home arena, fueled his fandom. He attended Estancia High School in Costa Mesa and later played college golf at UCLA before embarking on his professional career in 2016.
