Israel Adesanya Weighs In on Zuffa Boxing’s Big Moves
Another prominent UFC fighter has publicly reacted to the substantial paychecks being offered by Zuffa Boxing. Following Dana White’s signing of Conor Benn to a reported one-fight deal worth $15 million, former two-time middleweight champion Israel Adesanya has shared his perspective.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Adesanya commented on the UFC’s new broadcast deal with Paramount and its potential impact on Zuffa Boxing. “Hey man, this whole Paramount thing is something,” Adesanya stated. “It’s something. But at the moment, we’re playing the cards we’re dealt.”
Adesanya believes the UFC is adapting to the competitive landscape. “I think the UFC, they enjoy what they do. After a few years, like anything, sometimes you need a little something else to spice it up, so now they’ve got Zuffa Boxing for themselves,” he explained. He acknowledged Dana White’s strategic move, adding, “He clocked this game. They have the NFL, the NBA of combat sports. So now, he’s like, ‘F*ck it, I’m going to go do the same thing in boxing.’ And already the signees they’ve had is crazy. Conor Benn, Jai Opetaia fighting this weekend, as well. Crazy.”
The Pay Disparity
Adesanya understands White’s drive for challenge but questions if the UFC is still enough. He also highlighted the financial implications. “I understand,” Adesanya said. “We know these guys are top class boxers. They’re the best in the world at what they do, but so are we. This is the UFC. And if one guy can command that kind of money for one fight, and that’s from the same company, Zuffa, and this is what’s been keeping the lights on is the UFC. This is what we love. We love Ultimate Fighting, not Limited Fighting.”
He jokingly added, “So, I don’t feel jaded, but I’m like, I want $15 million for one fight, too!”
While a $15 million payday isn’t currently in the cards for Adesanya, he’s focused on his upcoming bout against Joe Pyfer in the main event of UFC Seattle on March 28.
Fighter Reactions and Upcoming Fights
Max Holloway has also urged UFC fighters to “know your worth” in light of the Zuffa Boxing deal. Charles Oliveira has expressed interest in a fight with Conor McGregor, primarily “for the money… that’s it.”
