On Saturday, June 6, at 7 p.m., the Peterborough Memorial Centre will host a grand ceremony to welcome six extraordinary individuals into the Peterborough and District Sports Hall of Fame.

The Class of 2026 is a diverse group of legends who have left an indelible mark on their respective disciplines. Joining the ranks of excellence are:

    n

  • John Grant Jr. – A powerhouse in Lacrosse.
  • Terry Paul – A master of rowing.
  • Kelleigh Traynor-Hartnett – A standout in hockey.
  • Tim Watts – An archery expert.
  • Jeff Twohey – A distinguished hockey builder.
  • Al Crowe – A legendary figure in Fastball.

Al Crowe: A Legacy of Versatility and Victory

Among this year’s inductees, Al Crowe stands out as a testament to the spirit of the multi-sport athlete. Long before he became a cornerstone of the fastball community, Al showcased his prowess on the ice. In 1969, he was a pivotal member of the Lakefield H.S. District schoolboy Curling Championship team, leading them as vice-skip to victories at both the COSSA and OFSAA Championships.

The “Mr. Softball” of Peterborough

While curling showcased his early talent, fastball became Al Crowe’s true calling. After honing his skills in the Lakefield Men’s League and the Peterborough Men’s City Softball League (PMCSL), Al transitioned into a coaching role that would redefine success in the region.

His coaching record is nothing short of legendary, including:

    n

  • Nine George Dormer Trophies for securing first-place league finishes.
  • Nine Taylor Trophies for league championships.
  • OASA Intermediate A titles in 1993 and 2003.
  • Leading the Curve Lake team to the Ontario Native All Ontario Championship in 1996 and 2003.

Al’s commitment extended beyond the professional level. Between 1989 and 1995, he mentored the next generation by coaching minor boy’s fastball, capturing an OASA Pee-Wee A title in 1993. For his unwavering dedication, he has been honored with the Doug McCamus Award, the Brent McCue Heart Award, and the coveted title of “Mr. Softball.”

A Life of Service and Family Honor

Beyond the diamond, Al Crowe has served the community with equal passion. With a distinguished 31-year career with the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), he was awarded the OPP Exemplary Service Medal in 1992 and the 30-year service award in 2002, proving that his discipline and leadership extended far beyond the sports arena.

This induction is more than just a personal milestone; it is a family legacy. By entering the Hall of Fame, Al joins his father, Bob Crowe, cementing the Crowe name as a dynasty of sporting excellence in the Peterborough district.
