Genoa vs Torino: A Battle for Serie A Survival
Both Genoa and Torino find themselves hovering precariously above the Serie A drop zone, making their clash at Stadio Ferraris on Sunday a pivotal encounter. Neither side can afford to drop points as the relegation battle intensifies, with Genoa’s recent resurgence stalling and Torino tumbling down the league table.
Genoa’s Recent Form
After a series of high-scoring matches – including one win and two dramatic defeats – Genoa settled for a 0-0 draw away to Cremonese last weekend. This result showcased a newfound defensive solidity, as the Grifone have now kept clean sheets in three of their last six Serie A matches – a significant improvement from their previous record.
Despite Daniele De Rossi’s initial positive impact after replacing Patrick Vieira, Genoa remain just three points clear of the relegation places. A recurring issue has been their inability to hold onto leads, having already surrendered seven points from winning positions in 2026, totaling 20 points lost from advantageous positions this season. Their reliance on set pieces is also notable, with centre-back Leo Ostigard being a key goal threat; a league-high 48% of their Serie A goals have originated from dead-ball situations.
At home, Genoa have a mixed record, winning only three of 13 league games at the Ferraris this season. However, they are unbeaten in their last three home games against Torino, keeping a clean sheet in each contest. In fact, over six years and 334 minutes of top-flight football have passed since they last conceded a goal at home to Toro, a streak De Rossi will be eager to maintain.
Torino’s Struggles
Torino secured a 2-1 victory in the reverse fixture in October, but their overall form has been concerning. They’ve won 10 and lost just one of the last 16 meetings, but their recent performances suggest a team in crisis. They’ve taken only four points from their last six matches, and have conceded 28 goals and suffered nine defeats since the November international break – both joint league highs.
A goal difference of -19 is their worst at this stage of any season for 23 years, and they’ve conceded 10 goals in their last three away matches. Adding to the turmoil, fan protests against club president Urbano Cairo during last week’s 2-1 loss to Bologna highlighted the growing discontent. This defeat, against a team in even worse form, left them just six points clear of danger, intensifying the pressure on their trip to Marassi.
Team News
Genoa: De Rossi is likely to stick with a settled side, despite the draw against Cremonese. Ruslan Malinovskyi has been in good form, scoring in three of his last four appearances, while Lorenzo Colombo has equaled his best Serie A goal tally of six for a season. Tommaso Baldanzi, on loan from Roma, is fit to be on the bench. Benjamin Siegrist remains the only injury concern.
Torino: Torino captain Nikola Vlasic has also reached six Serie A goals this season. However, Che Adams is ruled out until next month with a thigh injury, meaning Giovanni Simeone, Duvan Zapata, Alieu Njie, and Sandro Kulenovic will compete for a starting spot. Ivan Ilic has returned to full training, but Rafa Obrador, Tino Anjorin, and Ardian Ismajli remain sidelined.
Possible Lineups
Genoa: Bijlow; Marcandalli, Ostigard, Vasquez; Norton-Cuffy, Frendrup, Malinovskyi, Ellertsson, Martin; Vitinha, Colombo
Torino: Paleari; Marianucci, Maripan, Coco; Pedersen, Casadei, Prati, Lazaro; Vlasic; Simeone, Kulenovic
Prediction
This match promises to be a tense and closely contested affair. Both teams possess defensive vulnerabilities, suggesting a potential for goals. Genoa, with their more potent attack and home advantage, are favored to secure a victory that would significantly boost their survival hopes.
