The IMMAF Legacy Hits the Big Stage: Abdul Hussein and Magomed Tuchalov Enter the UFC
The road to the UFC is paved with sweat, discipline, and for some, gold medals. This weekend, at UFC Abu Dhabi: Ankalaev vs. Guskov, the spotlight shines on two fighters who proved their dominance long before turning professional: Abdul Hussein and Magomed Tuchalov.
While their career paths have been drastically different, both athletes share a prestigious foundation—they are alumni of the International Mixed Martial Arts Federation (IMMAF), the gold standard for amateur MMA globally.
Abdul Hussein: The Seasoned Bantamweight Warrior
For Abdul Hussein, the journey to the Octagon has been a masterclass in persistence. During the mid-2010s, Hussein was a force to be reckoned with in the IMMAF bantamweight division. Representing Finland, he first captured the eyes of the world by winning the 2015 European Championships, capping off a dominant run with a victory over Marco Zannetti.
Hussein didn’t stop there. In 2016, he ascended to the pinnacle of the sport, claiming the World Championship title after a grueling series of victories against tough opponents like Alexander Pereira and Hughie O’Rourke, eventually defeating David Evans in the final.
Unlike some prospects who are fast-tracked into the big leagues, Hussein took the scenic route, building a formidable professional record. He enters his UFC debut with an impressive 15-2 record. Despite a setback against fellow IMMAF alum Muhammad Mokaev in 2021, Hussein has since been on a destructive winning streak.
The Challenge: Hussein faces a steep climb in his debut against Cody Gibson. The American veteran brings over 30 professional fights and extensive UFC experience. However, Hussein’s deep reservoir of experience makes him one of the most prepared debutants in recent memory.
Magomed Tuchalov: The Undefeated Prodigy
If Hussein is the seasoned veteran, Magomed Tuchalov is the explosive newcomer. The Russian fighter made waves in 2019 when he secured the IMMAF Junior World Championship in the 185-pound division, showcasing a level of skill that far exceeded his age.
Tuchalov’s professional transition has been nothing short of dominant. He arrives in the UFC with a perfect 6-0 record, having finished five of those six opponents. Known for an aggressive, high-pressure style, Tuchalov rarely lets a fight reach the judges’ scorecards. His arsenal is diverse, featuring:
- n
- Devastating ground and pound
- Clinical submissions
- Unexpected strikes, including a signature flying knee
Coming off a first-round stoppage of former UFC fighter Caio Machado, Tuchalov has proven he belongs on the world stage. He will now test his power against the hard-hitting Brazilian Brendson Ribeiro.
Two Paths, One Goal
The contrast between these two fighters is striking. Abdul Hussein spent years grinding through various organizations to earn his shot, while Magomed Tuchalov rocketed to the top in just six fights. Yet, both stand as testaments to the quality of the IMMAF circuit.
As they step into the Octagon in Abu Dhabi, the question remains: Can amateur gold translate into UFC stardom? Based on their trajectories, the MMA world should be paying very close attention.
