Fiorentina vs. Crystal Palace: Vanoli’s Bold Strategy for Conference League Comeback

Paolo Vanoli has revealed the reasoning behind his exceptionally attacking Fiorentina lineup as they prepare to face Crystal Palace in the second leg of the Conference League quarter-final. With a daunting 3-0 deficit from the first leg at Selhurst Park, the Italian coach is pulling out all the stops in a bid to reach their fourth consecutive Conference League semi-final. Kick-off at the Stadio Artemio Franchi is scheduled for 20:00 UK time (21:00 CEST).

A Moment of Silence & Remembrance

Before the match, a minute’s silence will be observed to honor the passing of Alex Manninger, Fiorentina’s goalkeeper during the 2001-02 season. Vanoli expressed his deep sorrow, stating, “It’s a tragedy. I found out this afternoon. Alex was an exceptional lad, I was fortunate enough to play with him here in Florence, we are close to his family, it’s hard to find the words.” The team will also wear black armbands as a mark of respect.

Facing a Steep Uphill Battle

Despite the challenging circumstances, Vanoli remains optimistic. “Of course we all believe, so do these fans, who showed once again despite a difficult season that they are behind us. It is a dream, so we must always believe,” he stated. He emphasized the need for a 110% effort from his players against a “strong opponent” who have been in good form in Serie A.

Vanoli also lamented the unavailability of key players in the first leg. “As I said in the first leg, what disappointed me was not having a full squad to choose from in this tie.”

Injury Concerns & Tactical Approach

Fiorentina will be without Moise Kean, alongside Marco Brescianini, Fabiano Parisi, Tariq Lamptey, and Niccolò Fortini. Dodo is also suspended. To combat the deficit, Vanoli has opted for a highly aggressive formation, deploying four strikers alongside the creative talents of Nicolò Fagioli and Rolando Mandragora in midfield. The right-back position remains uncertain, with Marin Pongracic or Pietro Comuzzo vying for the spot.

“In order to achieve something remarkable, mentality and belief is the most important thing, as the players need to give their best performance of the season,” Vanoli explained. “We know it’ll be tough, as Crystal Palace showed how they can punish the first mistake, but we’ve got to try something that would remain in the history of Fiorentina during a season that has been complicated from the start.”

Serie A Success Provides Momentum

Fiorentina’s primary focus this season has been securing their Serie A status, a goal they are close to achieving, currently eight points clear of the relegation zone. Monday’s 1-0 victory over Lazio provided a significant boost in confidence and alleviated some of the pressure on the team.

“When I made the line-up, I realised if you have to recover this deficit, you need players who can score goals. Robin Gosens is another, as he is very dangerous on set plays and runs to the back post. Everything can become important tonight,” Vanoli concluded, highlighting the importance of attacking firepower in their quest for a comeback.
