Federica Brignone Eyes Medal at Cortina, Named Flag Bearer

Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy – Federica Brignone is gearing up for the downhill competition at the World Ski Championships, and her initial run has provided encouraging signs. Despite lingering doubts, the Italian skier navigated the challenging Olympia delle Tofane piste with a time of 1:40.66.

Downhill Practice Interrupted by Conditions

The first downhill practice session wasn’t without its challenges. Slovenia’s Ilka Stuhec, wearing bib number one, experienced a fall, leading to a temporary halt in proceedings. Further disruptions occurred as dense fog descended upon the course, ultimately suspending the practice run after Brignone’s descent. The medal race is scheduled for Sunday, February 8th, at 11:30 AM, preceded by a second practice session tomorrow.

Brignone to Lead Italy into Opening Ceremony

Adding to the excitement, Federica Brignone has been chosen as the Italian flag bearer, alongside Amos Mosaner, for the opening ceremony taking place in Cortina. This is a significant honor for the accomplished skier.

“The slope is amazing,” Brignone commented after her run. “With all this snow, I didn’t think it was possible to ski down. Huge kudos to everyone who prepared it so well. I didn’t execute the turns I wanted, but I tried to be myself. It was a good run; I didn’t do everything I wanted, but I’m trying to get comfortable with the speed. It’s not quite the same as last year, but I’m happy to be here, it’s special.”

Selection Considerations

Brignone acknowledged the competitive landscape, stating, “There are six of us vying for four spots. The downhill will be earned by those who deserve it. Of course, I need to decide if I’ll participate in the selection process.”
