More Than Just a Game: Evgeni Malkin’s Impact Off the Ice
In the world of professional hockey, Evgeni Malkin is renowned for his incredible skill and leadership as an alternate captain for the Pittsburgh Penguins. However, his most significant victories aren’t happening on the scoreboard, but in the lives of families facing their toughest battles.
Through the inspiring ‘I’m Score for Kids’ initiative, Malkin has once again proven that his commitment to the community is as strong as his game. For the 2025-26 season, the Penguins star has partnered with local McDonald’s restaurants to provide critical support to the Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) of Pittsburgh and Morgantown.
The Power of a Point: How ‘I’m Score for Kids’ Works
Malkin’s approach to philanthropy is as strategic as his playmaking. By tying his performance on the ice to charitable giving, he turns every goal and assist into a lifeline for others. This season, Malkin committed to donating $710 for every regular-season point he scored.
With an impressive 61 points in the 2025-26 season, Malkin’s personal contribution reached $43,310. In a powerful display of community synergy, local McDonald’s restaurants matched this amount, bringing the total seasonal donation to a staggering $86,620.
A Legacy of Generosity
This isn’t a one-time gesture. Since launching the initiative prior to the 2022-23 season, the partnership between Malkin and McDonald’s has created a lasting legacy of support. Over the past four seasons, the total amount donated to RMHC Pittsburgh and Morgantown has reached $370,620.
Eleanor Reigel, CEO of RMHC Pittsburgh and Morgantown, highlighted the importance of this support, stating that such generosity brings “comfort and reassurance to families who are facing a difficult medical journey.”
Making a House a Home
But what does this money actually achieve? For families travelling long distances to ensure their children receive life-saving medical care, Ronald McDonald House Charities provides more than just a bed—it provides a sanctuary.
The impact in 2025 speaks for itself:
- n
- 822 families served across Pittsburgh and Morgantown.
- 21,059 nights of safe, warm accommodation.
- Support for families from 42 counties in West Virginia and 41 counties in Pennsylvania.
- Welcome guests from 37 different states and five different countries.
A Community Effort
This initiative is a testament to the power of local business. The 207 McDonald’s restaurants in the Three Rivers area are owned and operated by local entrepreneurs who live and work in their neighborhoods. By employing hundreds of residents and encouraging customer contributions through programs like ‘Round-Up’ and Shamrock Shake donations, the community is actively investing in the health and wellbeing of its youngest members.
Evgeni Malkin continues to show that while points and trophies are great, the true measure of a champion is the positive change they leave in the world. For the families at RMHC, Malkin is the ultimate MVP.
