College Basketball Crown: Seton Hall’s Tournament Snub and the Changing Landscape of March Madness

Seton Hall’s Tournament Dreams Dashed: A Look at the Shifting Metrics of College Basketball

For the first time in program history, a Seton Hall basketball team boasting 21 wins finds itself on the outside looking in as Selection Sunday approaches. Despite a strong regular season record, projections consistently exclude the Pirates from the NCAA Tournament field, a stark reality reflecting the increasingly competitive and metrics-driven world of college basketball.

The Bracketology Breakdown

The shift in the Big East‘s landscape is palpable. Seton Hall (21-12) doesn’t appear in the Bracket Matrix, a compilation of projections from 117 bracketologists. ESPN’s Joe Lunardi, a leading figure in bracketology, places them last among the “Next Four Teams Out,” meaning they are eighth in line to potentially sneak into March Madness. Oklahoma, Auburn, San Diego State, New Mexico, Indiana, Stanford, and Cincinnati stand ahead of them in the pecking order.

What Went Wrong? A Deep Dive into the Metrics

The core issue? A lack of impactful wins. Seton Hall holds a NET ranking of 54, coupled with a disappointing 1-6 record against Quad 1 opponents. These metrics, heavily weighted by the NCAA selection committee, have significantly hampered their resume. While the Pirates excelled with a 10-1 record outside of conference play, their sole Quad 1 victory came against N.C. State. A December win at Kansas State, initially viewed as a strong result, lost some luster as the Wildcats struggled later in the season.

Within the Big East, Seton Hall went winless (0-7) against teams projected to make the tournament: UConn, St. John’s, and Villanova. The conference’s overall performance didn’t provide much margin for error.

A Historical Perspective

This situation is a dramatic departure from Seton Hall’s past. The program previously secured NCAA bids with fewer wins – in 1994 with 17 wins, 2006 with 18, and 2019 with 19. Prior to this year, only the 2012 team (20 wins) and the 2024 squad (also 20 wins) missed the NCAA tournament with 20+ wins. Notably, the 2024 team went on to win the NIT championship under head coach Shaheen Holloway, a testament to their talent despite the tournament snub.

The Evolving Landscape of College Basketball Selection

The NCAA Tournament selection process has become increasingly reliant on quantitative data. While traditional factors like conference championships and overall record remain important, metrics like NET ranking, strength of schedule, and quadrant wins carry significant weight. This shift highlights the challenges faced by teams in strong conferences, where securing quality wins is paramount.
