Carson Hocevar to Start Last at Darlington After Inspection Penalty
Carson Hocevar will have an uphill battle in Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series Goodyear 400 at Darlington Raceway. According to Bob Pockrass of FOX Sports, Hocevar will start from the rear of the field after his No. 77 Chevrolet team made an unapproved adjustment – specifically, a change to the upper control arm. Originally slated to start from Row 8 alongside Justin Allgaier, Hocevar now faces the challenge of navigating through the field at the historic track.
New Short Track Package Debuts at Darlington
This weekend marks the first race at Darlington to utilize NASCAR’s new short track package. The package includes a 750-horsepower engine, a three-inch rear spoiler, and a reduction in diffuser strakes, all designed to enhance competition and side-by-side racing. The changes are expected to significantly impact handling and overall race dynamics.
Tire Strategy Will Be Key
Tires are expected to play a crucial role in the Goodyear 400. Darlington hasn’t been repaved in 18 years, creating a challenging and abrasive track surface. Teams will have 12 sets of Goodyear tires available for the weekend. The left-side tire is a familiar compound from last season at Darlington, while the right-side tire debuted at Kansas Speedway in September. Drivers, including Denny Hamlin, are predicting significant tire falloff – potentially around four seconds per lap – adding another layer of complexity to race strategy. Understanding tire wear and managing pit stops will be paramount for success.
A Throwback to Racing Legend Dale Earnhardt
Despite the setback, Hocevar will be turning heads on track with a stunning throwback paint scheme honoring Dale Earnhardt. The No. 77 Chevrolet is adorned with a design inspired by Earnhardt’s iconic 1981 blue and yellow car. The scheme has even received the stamp of approval from Dale Earnhardt Jr., who called it his favorite paint scheme his father ever used.
“This is my favorite Dale Earnhardt paint scheme,” Earnhardt Jr. said on Dale Jr. Download. “It’s the 1981 car and it gets no love because ’81 was a lost year. The car is underrated. That yellow nose with those old vintage stripes is just, in my opinion, straight badass vintage.”
While Darlington traditionally hosts Throwback Weekend with teams encouraged to run heritage paint schemes, NASCAR didn’t mandate it this season. However, the No. 77 team chose to honor Earnhardt regardless, demonstrating a passion for the sport’s history.
Looking Ahead
Carson Hocevar’s race at Darlington will be a test of both skill and strategy. Starting from the back, he’ll need to make quick work of the field while managing tire wear and capitalizing on opportunities. The combination of the new short track package, the challenging track surface, and the inspiring throwback scheme promises an exciting race for fans.
