Cam Achord Named Packers Special Teams Coordinator: A Deep Dive

Cam Achord Joins the Green Bay Packers as Special Teams Coordinator

The Green Bay Packers have announced the hiring of Cam Achord as their new Special Teams Coordinator. Head Coach Matt LaFleur revealed the appointment on Friday, bringing a wealth of experience to the team’s special teams unit.

A Decade of NFL Experience

Achord arrives in Green Bay with a decade of experience coaching special teams in the NFL, including four seasons as a coordinator. His track record demonstrates a consistent ability to elevate performance in this crucial aspect of the game.

Recent Success with the New York Giants

Prior to joining the Packers, Achord served as an assistant special teams coach with the New York Giants (2024-25). During his tenure, the Giants’ kickoff return unit achieved a franchise-record 1,942 yards on 70 returns, averaging an impressive 27.7 yards per return in a single season – the second-highest average in franchise history and ranking 5th in the NFL in 2025.

The Giants also saw two players recognized for their special teams prowess in 2024, with Isaiah Simmons and Ihmir Smith-Marsette earning NFC Special Teams Player of the Week honors. Smith-Marsette’s 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in Week 17 was a highlight of the season.

Proven Leadership with the New England Patriots

Before his time with the Giants, Achord spent six years with the New England Patriots, initially as an assistant special teams coach (2018-19) and then as the special teams coordinator (2020-23). Under his leadership, the Patriots consistently ranked among the league’s best in special teams performance.

  • 2023: Finished No. 3 in the NFL in kickoff return average (26.2 yards) and No. 6 in coverage.
  • 2022: Led the NFL in punt return yards (418) and total return yards (1,274). Rookie Marcus Jones earned first-team All-Pro honors.
  • 2020: Ranked No. 1 in Rick Gosselin’s annual NFL special teams rankings.

Gunner Olszewski also earned first-team All-Pro honors as a punt returner in 2020, leading the league in punt return yards (346) and average (17.3 yards).

Early Career and Collegiate Background

Achord’s coaching journey began in the collegiate ranks, with five seasons at Southwest Mississippi Community College (2013-17) and graduate assistant roles at the University of Southern Mississippi (2010-12). He was a four-year starter and team captain at Belhaven University.
