Bruins Score: James Hagens Begins Pro Journey with Providence Bruins

James Hagens, the Boston Bruins’ highly touted No. 7 pick from the 2025 NHL Draft, has officially begun his professional hockey career. The 19-year-old forward recently signed an American Hockey League (AHL) amateur tryout agreement with the Providence Bruins and participated in his first pro practice on Tuesday.

“It was fun. It was really exciting being out there for my first pro practice. It’s definitely something I’ll never forget,” Hagens shared, expressing his enthusiasm for this next chapter. “It’s been really exciting, just waiting to see what the next chapter looks like and now being able to be here, I couldn’t be more excited.”

Hagens Set to Debut with Providence

Hagens is slated to make his AHL debut with Providence against the Springfield Thunderbirds on Wednesday. He expressed his eagerness to prove himself at the professional level. “Once I heard that, I was really open for it,” he said. “It’s a great chance to be able to showcase your game, to be able to be a part of a team like this.”

Dominant Performance at Boston College

Before joining the Bruins organization, Hagens was a standout player at Boston College. This season, he led Hockey East in scoring with an impressive 47 points (23 goals, 24 assists) in just 34 games. He also led the team in game-winning goals (6), hat tricks (2), and shots on goal (133). His collegiate career boasts 84 points (34 goals, 50 assists) in 71 games.

USNTDP Success and International Acclaim

Hagens’ success extends beyond college hockey. He spent two seasons (2022-24) with the United States National Team Development Program (USNTDP), accumulating a remarkable 187 points (72 goals, 115 assists). He has also represented the U.S. on the international stage, winning gold at the 2025 IIHF World Junior Championship and the 2023 U-18 World Championship. At the 2024 U-18 World Championship, he set a single-tournament scoring record with 22 points, earning tournament MVP honors and a silver medal for the United States.

Bruins Management’s Perspective

Bruins General Manager Don Sweeney emphasized the importance of this AHL stint for Hagens’ development. “As James referenced today, he’s excited to be able to play right away, and I think this presents that opportunity right away and then we just get to explore options as it goes along,” Sweeney stated. “He gets acclimated to the pro game, it’s a big step coming from college, and it just allows him to jump right into the lineup.” Sweeney added that Hagens’ progression will be continuously evaluated, with coach Marco Sturm ultimately determining when he’s ready for an NHL call-up.

Sweeney also noted Hagens’ versatility, highlighting his ability to play both center and wing. “We drafted him as a center, he can play center, but now he’s playing both sides. So, I think that adds to the versatility.”

Support from Bruins Players

Hagens has already received encouragement from current Bruins players, including defenseman Charlie McAvoy, who reached out with a welcoming message, connecting over their shared Long Island roots. This support system is expected to aid Hagens as he navigates the challenges of professional hockey.

James Hagens’ journey is one to watch. His talent, combined with the Bruins’ development system, positions him as a potential future star in the NHL. Keep an eye on the Boston Bruins and the Providence Bruins as Hagens continues to hone his skills and pursue his NHL dream.
