Brandin Podziemski: The Warriors’ Unexpected Spark
The Golden State Warriors are battling to salvage their season in the final stretch. After a prolonged period without consecutive victories – a slump exacerbated by injuries to key players like Jimmy Butler and Steph Curry – the Warriors have recently achieved a significant milestone: three straight wins against the Dallas Mavericks, Brooklyn Nets, and Washington Wizards. While the team has experimented with various rotations and starting lineups, one player has consistently delivered standout performances: Brandin Podziemski.
Podziemski’s Iron Man Status and Recent Surge
Remarkably, Podziemski hasn’t missed a single game this season, placing him among only 18 players to have appeared in 74 or more games. However, it’s his recent form that’s truly capturing attention. During the Warriors’ current three-game winning streak, Podziemski has been exceptional, exceeding 20 points in each contest and providing invaluable production.
The young guard’s season has had its ups and downs, with some off-court discussions sparked by confident statements that didn’t entirely resonate with the fanbase. Nevertheless, his play on the court in recent games has been undeniably impressive.
Podziemski on His Success: Aggression and Understanding the Game
Following the victory over the Wizards, Podziemski shared insights into his recent success. “I’ve been getting to the line quite a bit. I think it’s helped. Just taking good shots within the flow of the game and getting to the foul line. (The key to getting there) is really understanding the rules. I learned a lot from Jimmy (Butler) early in the season and just watching other players play. I think it’s constant aggression, in terms of going to the basket. The more drives you do a game, the more likely you’re going to get fouled. Just always being aggressive going to the rim.”
His free-throw shooting during this stretch has been remarkable: 2-2 against the Mavericks, a perfect 8-8 against the Nets, and 7-8 against the Wizards. This significantly surpasses his season averages of under 3 free-throw attempts per game and around 77% from the line.
Stepping Up in Curry’s Absence
Steph Curry’s extended absence due to a knee injury has undoubtedly impacted the team’s overall performance. However, Podziemski has seized the opportunity, embracing the increased minutes and responsibilities. In the 24 games Curry has missed since the end of January, Podziemski is averaging 15.4 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 4.3 assists in 31.9 minutes per game. He’s scored in double figures 19 times during this period and surpassed the 20-point mark on 7 occasions.
A Glimpse into the Warriors’ Future?
Alongside Gui Santos, who has also played in all 24 of those games and is averaging 15.9 points, Podziemski is offering a promising glimpse into the Warriors’ future. Their consistent performance suggests they could be key components of the team’s core after Curry and other veterans eventually retire. This dynamic duo is inspiring confidence and excitement among Warriors fans. You can find more information about the Warriors’ season at NBA.com/Warriors.
