Boston Bruins Eyeing Blackhawks Players Ahead of 2026 NHL Trade Deadline
The Boston Bruins are firmly in the playoff conversation, currently holding a wild card spot in the Eastern Conference. As the 2026 NHL trade deadline approaches, General Manager Don Sweeney is likely exploring options to bolster the roster for a deep postseason run. Interestingly, the Chicago Blackhawks, positioned as sellers due to their current standing, have emerged as a potential trade partner, with two players drawing significant interest from Boston: forward Ryan Donato and defenseman Connor Murphy.
Ryan Donato: A Familiar Face Returning to Boston?
According to a recent article in The Boston Globe by Kevin Paul Dupont, Ryan Donato is a prime target for the Bruins. This isn’t a new name for Bruins fans; Donato began his NHL career with the Black and Gold, making him a well-known commodity within the organization. The 29-year-old forward offers versatility, capable of playing both center and wing, and could provide a valuable boost to Boston’s top-nine forwards.
Donato’s current season with the Blackhawks has been productive, with 13 goals, 12 assists, and 25 points in 57 games. He’s coming off a career year in 2023-24, where he recorded 31 goals, 31 assists, and 62 points. Crucially, Donato isn’t just a rental player; he carries a $4 million cap hit through the 2028-29 season, offering long-term value.
Connor Murphy: Strengthening the Bruins’ Defensive Core
Alongside Donato, defenseman Connor Murphy is also on the Bruins’ radar. Murphy, a pending unrestricted free agent (UFA), would address a need for depth and stability on the right side of Boston’s blueline. His steady defensive play and physicality would be a welcome addition, potentially slotting him into the second pairing and contributing to the penalty kill.
This season, Murphy has registered four goals, eight assists, and 12 points in 57 games for the Blackhawks, along with 55 hits and 84 blocked shots. His defensive contributions are significant, and acquiring him would provide a short-term upgrade with potential for a longer-term commitment if a contract extension can be negotiated.
What This Means for the Bruins
Dupont notes that if the Bruins can solidify their second line with the potential return of Zach Zacha alongside Casey Mittelstadt and Viktor Arvidsson, Sweeney can then focus on adding scoring depth and right-shot defense. The Blackhawks appear to be a logical trade partner to address both needs. The Bruins’ success in the playoffs may hinge on making the right moves at the deadline, and Donato and Murphy represent intriguing possibilities to enhance their championship aspirations.
