Austin Wells: A Tucson Connection Making Waves in the World Baseball Classic
The World Baseball Classic (WBC) is known for its international flair and surprising team compositions, and this year is no exception. A fascinating story has emerged with Austin Wells, the New York Yankees catcher and former University of Arizona standout, proudly representing the Dominican Republic. This isn’t a case of switching allegiances; it’s a celebration of heritage, as Wells’ mother, Michelle, is of Dominican descent.
From Tucson to the WBC: A Local Contingent
Wells isn’t the only player with ties to Tucson making an impact in the 2026 WBC. A total of four athletes with connections to the region are competing on the world stage. Joining Wells are former Arizona Wildcats Rio Gomez (Colombia) and Justin Wylie (Great Britain), alongside Cienega High School alum Nick Gonzales (Mexico). Their participation highlights the growing baseball talent nurtured in Southern Arizona.
Rio Gomez: Leading Colombia with Experience
Former Arizona pitcher Rio Gomez is spearheading Colombia’s pitching efforts. Gomez previously pitched for the Wildcats from 2015-2017, compiling a 10-6 record with a 3.80 ERA. He’s no stranger to the WBC, having previously represented Colombia in 2023. Gomez recently had a stellar season with the Wei Chuan Dragons in the Chinese Professional Baseball League, boasting a 5-3 record with an impressive 1.17 ERA. He stated after his recent start against China, “A lot of us were on that team. We knew the objective was to get back to (the) next World Baseball Classic. We left a lot out there in ’23. We could have done much better. Everybody was focused. We know what we need to do to finish the task at hand here.”
Nick Gonzales: A Rising Star Representing Mexico
Pittsburgh Pirates infielder Nick Gonzales is making his debut in the WBC, proudly representing Mexico. Gonzales excelled at Cienega High School and New Mexico State, where he batted .399 with a .514 on-base percentage. Drafted seventh overall in 2020, he’s become a semi-regular in the MLB, showcasing a .257 batting average with 14 home runs in 225 games. “It’s just an incredible honor to get to put on that jersey,” Gonzales shared via the Pittsburgh Pirates Instagram. “It’s something that not a lot of people get to do. So the opportunity to play in the WBC, definitely not gonna pass on that. Super excited.”
Austin Wells: Balancing Rookie Status and International Pride
Austin Wells’ journey to the WBC is a testament to his dedication and talent. After a successful career at the University of Arizona, where he was named Pac-12 Freshman of the Year in 2019, Wells was drafted by the New York Yankees in 2020. He quickly became the Yankees’ primary catcher, notching career highs with 21 home runs and 71 RBIs in 2025. Yankees manager Aaron Boone noted, “Being a major-league catcher, especially as a rookie and first- and second-year player, man, there’s a lot of things that you’re focusing on on a daily basis away from your hitting that other positions have a little easier time leaning into. … I still think there’s a lot more in there offensively, and hopefully we can keep moving to that point.”
Justin Wylie: A Veteran Presence for Great Britain
Rounding out the Tucson contingent is outfielder Justin Wylie, representing Great Britain. Wylie played alongside Wells at Arizona in 2019, slashing .341/.449/.634 in his lone season as a Wildcat. He’s built a professional career in independent and international leagues, amassing 127 home runs and 106 stolen bases. Wylie reflected on his development, stating, “I’ve definitely evolved as a hitter and as a baseball player in general… I was pretty much saying, ‘OK, let’s learn how to drive the ball in the air consistently.’ That’s where you see the spark in power numbers.”
