ATP Barcelona: Fils Continues Impressive Form, Reaches Semifinals

Arthur Fils is making waves at the 2026 Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell, securing his spot in the semifinals with a commanding 6-3, 6-4 victory over second seed Lorenzo Musetti. This impressive performance continues a remarkable comeback for Fils, who spent eight months sidelined due to injury.

Since returning to the tour in February, Fils has demonstrated exceptional form. He reached the final in Doha and showcased his talent during the ‘Sunshine Double’ swing, reaching the semifinals in Miami and the quarterfinals in Indian Wells. His transition to clay in Barcelona has been seamless, overcoming challenges like saving two match points in his opening match against Terence Atmane and a solid win against Brandon Nakashima.

Fils Outlasts Musetti in Key Exchanges

Against Musetti, Fils displayed confidence and tactical awareness. He consistently won crucial backhand exchanges, ultimately prevailing after 86 minutes. “Everyone waits for the big serve and big forehand, but I have a good backhand and can stay there without missing a backhand,” Fils shared after the match. “I was happy with the performance today, pretty solid throughout. With Lorenzo, it is always very tough because he can change the rhythm. He does a slice and then one with spin. It is a lot of mix. I tried to be very aggressive on the court.”

This victory marks Fils’ second Top 10 win of the year and propels him into his 13th tour-level semifinal. Having reached the semifinals in Barcelona last year, the No. 30 player in the PIF ATP Rankings is determined to go even further this time, with a match against Spanish wild card Rafael Jodar awaiting him.

Rublev and Medjedovic Secure Semifinal Spots

Earlier in the day, Andrey Rublev and Hamad Medjedovic also booked their places in the semifinals. Rublev defeated Tomas Machac 6-4, 6-3, enjoying a flawless week on the clay courts, having not dropped a set in his first three matches. The World No. 15 boasts a 4-0 record in tour-level quarterfinals this year, though a title still eludes him. His last triumph came at the ATP 500 event in Doha last year.

Medjedovic continued his surprising run, backing up his upset victory over Alex de Minaur with a 7-6(6), 6-2 win against Nuno Borges. The Serbian qualifier is now in the semifinals of an ATP 500 event for the first time and has climbed 20 spots to No. 68 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings.

Musetti’s Struggles Continue

Lorenzo Musetti arrived in Barcelona searching for his first tour-level win since the Australian Open in January. He managed to secure victories against Martin Landaluce and Corentin Moutet before falling to Fils in the quarterfinals.
