Atlas FC: A Century of Passion, Resilience, and Footballing Excellence
In the heart of Guadalajara, a story of passion and persistence began on August 15, 1916. A group of young men, returning from their studies in England with a newfound love for football, gathered to create something legendary. This meeting marked the birth of Atlas FC, a club that would become a cornerstone of Mexican sports culture.
The Myth and the Colors: More Than Just a Name
The name Atlas FC is not a coincidence. Inspired by the Greek Titan condemned to carry the weight of the world on his shoulders, the founders felt a similar weight of responsibility and ambition. As founding member Juan José “Lico” Cortina once put it, they felt they were “the support of the world.”
Even the striking red and black vertical stripes of their jersey carry a deep meaning. These colors were chosen to honor Saint Lawrence, the patron saint of Ampleforth College, where several of the founding members had studied in the UK.
From Early Dominance to the Great Drought
Atlas was a true pioneer. They participated in the first Guadalajara Championship (1916-17) and were the first team from Jalisco to play in Mexico City in 1919. By 1943, they became founding members of the Liga Mayor (now known as Liga MX).
Between the 1940s and 60s, the club enjoyed a golden era, securing nine titles, including the prestigious 1950-51 championship. However, sports are often a rollercoaster. After this peak, Atlas entered a heartbreaking 71-year league title drought, facing three relegations to the second division and numerous struggles to stay afloat.
‘La Fiel’: The Heartbeat of the Club
Through the darkest hours, one element remained unshakable: “La Fiel” (The Faithful). This dedicated fanbase never abandoned the team, filling the stadiums with noise and hope regardless of the scoreline. Their loyalty is one of the most respected in all of global football.
The wait finally ended in spectacular fashion. Under the leadership of coach Diego Cocca, Atlas didn’t just break the curse—they dominated. The club achieved a historic bicampeonato, winning the Apertura 2021 and Clausura 2022, cementing their return to the pinnacle of Mexican soccer.
‘La Academia’: Shaping World-Class Talent
Beyond the trophies, Atlas FC is revered as “La Academia” for its extraordinary ability to develop youth talent. The club has produced some of the greatest players in Mexican history, including:
- n
- Rafael Márquez: The legendary captain and two-time Champions League winner with FC Barcelona.
- Andrés Guardado: A five-time World Cup veteran and a record-breaker in European football.
- Pável Pardo: A Bundesliga champion with Stuttgart.
- Jesús Corona: The key goalkeeper during the 2012 Olympic Gold medal victory.
A New Chapter: Looking Toward 2026 and Beyond
As Atlas FC celebrates its 110th anniversary in 2026, the club is entering a transformative phase. With the acquisition by Grupo PRODI, led by Miguel Ángel Bejos, the institution is focusing on financial stability and a restructured sporting project. The goal is clear: return Atlas to a position of permanent competitiveness in Liga MX.
For the fans of Atlas FC, the journey has proven that no matter how heavy the burden, resilience and loyalty always lead to glory.
