A’Shawn Robinson Released by the Carolina Panthers
CHARLOTTE – In a move signaling a shift towards a younger defensive line and strategic cap management, the Carolina Panthers have announced the release of veteran defensive tackle A’Shawn Robinson. The decision, made on Tuesday, marks the end of Robinson’s two-season stint with the team.
The 30-year-old Robinson proved to be a reliable presence, starting in 32 games and accumulating 145 tackles and 8.0 sacks during his time in Carolina. His performance was particularly crucial in 2024 when Derrick Brown faced a significant injury, missing 16 games. Robinson stepped up, achieving a career-high 80 tackles and 5.5 sacks.
A New Era on the Defensive Line
However, with the return of Derrick Brown, coupled with the recent free agent signings of Tershawn Wharton and Bobby Brown III, and the addition of rookie Cam Jackson (fifth round), the Panthers now boast increased depth on the defensive front. This influx of talent created a situation where Robinson’s role became less critical.
The Panthers are actively reshaping their roster during the offseason. Recent moves include re-signing defensive end LaBryan Ray and cornerback Robert Rochell, bolstering key depth positions. The team has also reportedly agreed to terms with quarterback Kenny Pickett, adding a seasoned option at the quarterback position. Further strengthening the defense, linebacker Devin Lloyd and pass-rusher Jaelan Phillips have also joined the team. These acquisitions demonstrate a proactive approach by Dan Morgan, Brandt Tilis, and Dave Canales to upgrade the roster.
