The road to Macau hasn’t been without its bumps. Before securing his latest victory, Perez faced one of the most challenging periods of his professional life. Entering the final fight of his previous contract against Charles Johnson, Perez was juggling the heavy demands of being a husband, father, brother, and friend, all while recovering from a loss to Asu Almabayev.
The mental and physical toll manifested in a rough weight cut, leading Perez to miss weight by two-and-a-half pounds. This mistake cost him 25% of his purse and any chance at a post-fight bonus. Yet, in a testament to his grit, Perez dispatched Johnson in the first round, proving that he could perform under extreme pressure.
“Actions have consequences. I messed up and had some consequences… but I always like to gamble on myself,” Perez reflected on the struggle.
