Aleksandar Kovacevic: A Full-Circle Moment Against Novak Djokovic

Aleksandar Kovacevic is set to face Novak Djokovic at the BNP Paribas Open, a moment that resonates deeply with a childhood dream. For Kovacevic, this isn’t just another match; it’s a culmination of years of dedication and a chance to compete against the player he’s admired since he was seven years old. He remembers being courtside at the US Open, watching Djokovic play Gael Monfils and even securing a photo with the future World No. 1.

Early Inspiration and the John McEnroe Tennis Academy

Kovacevic’s journey began at the John McEnroe Tennis Academy (JMTA) on Randall’s Island, where he was one of the first scholarship recipients. Encouraged by coach Gilad Bloom, the young American quickly found himself under the tutelage of the legendary John McEnroe.

A memorable encounter occurred in 2010 during a World TeamTennis match at the academy. The 11-year-old Kovacevic won the first point against McEnroe, prompting the tennis icon to rush the net. Kovacevic then followed up with a stunning one-handed backhand passing shot winner, a moment captured on video and viewed thousands of times. “I think that was the first time I met him and I was really little at that point,” Kovacevic recalled. “I remember the racquet being almost the size of me.”

McEnroe’s Hands-On Approach

Kovacevic eventually attended the University of Illinois, but his formative years were undeniably shaped by his time at JMTA. He emphasizes the rarity of a legend like McEnroe being so actively involved with young players.

“It was really cool to see that he was super involved with the kids, even back then. I feel that former pros…put their names on their academies, but it’s rare to see them hands on. That was the coolest thing for me about John, was that he would go out there and hit with us, be super involved.”

Beyond Tennis: A Gesture of Kindness

One particularly touching memory involves a simple act of kindness from McEnroe. Kovacevic was without shoes at the time, and McEnroe offered a pair from his own home. “I was out of shoes…he said, ‘Oh, I’ve got a pair at my house in New York. You come grab them.’ So I ended up going to his place…He gave me a pair of shoes, wished me luck. That was one of the cooler experiences of my life.”

A Competitive Spirit and Lasting Impact

Kovacevic remembers McEnroe’s unwavering competitive spirit, even when playing against juniors. “He doesn’t want to lose either. Even to the kids, he won’t let them slide.” McEnroe’s influence extends beyond tennis, and the two remain in contact today. Kovacevic appreciates McEnroe’s down-to-earth nature and his commitment to supporting young athletes.

“He’s pretty down to earth. It means the most to me when I can see the character of people like that where they don’t become too big for the little guys. I hope that he’s proud of that. The little kid who he gave a scholarship to a long time ago turned out to be alright at the sport.”

Kovacevic’s story is a testament to the power of mentorship and the enduring impact of a sporting legend. As he prepares to face Novak Djokovic, he carries with him the lessons and support he received from John McEnroe and others throughout his journey.
