Abner Uribe Seals Brewers’ Victory, Ending Six-Game Losing Streak
MILWAUKEE (AP) – The Milwaukee Brewers finally broke free from a frustrating six-game skid on Wednesday night, securing a hard-fought 2-1 victory against the Toronto Blue Jays. A key component of this win was the stellar performance of closer Abner Uribe, who earned his first save of the season.
The game was a pitcher’s duel for much of the evening. Toronto’s Dylan Cease delivered a dominant performance, striking out six and allowing only two hits and three walks across six scoreless innings. However, the Brewers capitalized on a fortunate eighth inning to turn the tide.
Brewers Rally in the Eighth
David Hamilton sparked the rally with an infield single, barely reaching first base as Toronto pitcher Tyler Rogers (1-1) struggled to field the ball cleanly. Sal Frelick followed up with a high bounce that proved difficult for Blue Jays catcher Brandon Valenzuela to handle, resulting in an error and putting runners on first and second.
William Contreras then grounded a single into right field, scoring Hamilton and advancing Frelick to third. The go-ahead run scored when Brice Turang grounded to second on a chopper that bounced over Rogers’ head. These crucial plays broke the deadlock and gave Milwaukee a 2-1 lead.
Uribe Closes it Out
Manager Craig Counsell turned to Abner Uribe in the ninth inning, a strategic move following Trevor Megill’s blown save opportunity in Tuesday’s 9-7 loss to the Blue Jays. Uribe delivered, retiring the side in order and securing the win for the Brewers. This was a crucial moment for Uribe, solidifying his role as a reliable closer.
Pitching Performances
Milwaukee starter Chad Patrick had a strong outing, working 6 2/3 innings and allowing just one run on three hits. He struck out two and walked two. Toronto managed to score in the first inning when Daulton Varsho walked, advanced to third on a hit by Vladimir Guerrero Jr., and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jesús Sánchez.
Aaron Ashby (4-0) was also instrumental in the victory, stranding runners on first and second in the eighth inning with a crucial strikeout of Myles Straw.
Looking Ahead
The series finale on Thursday will feature Patrick Corbin (0-0, 9.00 ERA) pitching for Toronto against Brandon Sproat (0-1, 10.45) for Milwaukee. Fans can expect another competitive matchup as both teams look to finish the series strong.
