Aaron Gordon’s Return: A Balancing Act of Impact and Health
Aaron Gordon’s return to the Denver Nuggets lineup has been anything but seamless. After overcoming the initial hurdle of simply getting back on the court following a re-aggravated hamstring strain, the forward now faces the dual challenge of making a significant impact while simultaneously ensuring his long-term health. His recent performance, a 1-for-7 shooting night against the New York Knicks, highlighted the work that remains.
A Difficult Return
“Obviously, I’ve gotta play better on the offensive side,” Gordon admitted after the game. “And defense. I’ve just gotta play better for us to have a chance to win. I think as I get my legs back under me, I’ll do that. So I’ve gotta be better for us.” The Knicks game, unfortunately, resulted in the Nuggets’ worst home loss in franchise history – a resounding 142-103 defeat. Despite the disappointing outcome, Gordon remains optimistic.
Staying Confident and Avoiding Re-Injury
Gordon emphasized the importance of playing without fear. “I’ve gotta stay on top of it. But I play without worry,” he explained. “When you’re worried about an injury out there, that’s usually when it happens. So I feel great. My body feels good. It’s just the timing and the pace of the game that needs to come back to me now, but I feel good.” His previous return in January was cut short by another hamstring issue, making this current recovery even more crucial.
The Numbers Tell a Story
The Nuggets’ record reflects Gordon’s importance: they are 17-7 when he plays this season, and a strong 12-4 when he logs 25 or more minutes. Coach David Adelman acknowledged the rhythm Gordon is seeking, comparing it to Nikola Jokic’s adjustment upon his own return from injury. “Aaron was on an emotional high, but he’s still trying to find a rhythm in a real game… It’s part of the whole thing.”
Preventative Measures and Future Outlook
Gordon is proactively addressing potential complications by adjusting his pre-game routine. “I’m getting to the gym earlier,” he revealed, “Much, much earlier. Warming up more diligently.” The Nuggets face a tough test on Monday against the Oklahoma City Thunder, a rematch of a physical contest from earlier this month. Gordon believes regaining his conditioning is key to improving his shooting percentage, which currently sits at a respectable 39% from the 3-point line.
Murray’s Injury and Team Health
Adding to the Nuggets’ concerns, Jamal Murray suffered a mild left ankle sprain during the Knicks game but is considered day-to-day. The team is optimistic he won’t miss significant time. The Denver Post provides ongoing coverage of the Nuggets’ injury situation.
Despite the challenges, Gordon remains grateful for the opportunity to play. “It’s fun. I’m grateful to be able to play this game and be out there and express myself through the game that I love to play,” he said. “Win, lose or draw, I have gratitude.”
