Measles Outbreak in Quebec City: Second Case Confirmed

Measles Alert: Second Confirmed Case in Quebec City

Public Health officials in the Capitale-Nationale region have confirmed a second case of measles within the city of Quebec, sparking renewed concern. This latest case follows closely on the heels of the first confirmed infection reported just a week prior.

Potential Exposure Locations

The infected individual is believed to have been present at several public locations during potentially contagious periods. Individuals who visited the following locations on the specified dates are urged to be vigilant:

  • Large Retail Stores in the Sainte-Foy-Sillery-Cap-Rouge and Les Rivières neighbourhoods (April 6th & 8th)
  • Various sectors of the Hôpital de l’Enfant-Jésus (April 7th, 8th & 9th)
  • The Emergency Department of the CHUL (Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Québec) (April 10th)

Public Health officials state that anyone present at these locations during the identified times is considered a contact of a confirmed measles case.

Understanding the Risk & Recommended Actions

An epidemiological investigation is currently underway to determine the source of the infection. The risk to the public is being carefully assessed.

If you are not adequately vaccinated against measles: Public Health advises self-isolation starting from the 5th day after the first potential exposure and continuing until the 14th day inclusive. This is crucial to prevent further spread.

If you are vaccinated against measles: Monitor yourself for any symptoms of the illness. While vaccination provides strong protection, it’s important to remain aware.

Growing Concerns & Previous Case

Last Thursday, Public Health officials expressed concern following the first confirmed case of measles in the region since 2019. This second case underscores the importance of vaccination and vigilance.

Symptoms of Measles include fever, cough, runny nose, red, watery eyes, and a rash that typically appears a few days after the initial symptoms. If you experience these symptoms, contact your healthcare provider immediately.
