USS Abraham Lincoln Incident: US Navy Engages Iranian Vessel
Washington – A tense standoff in the Arabian Sea unfolded earlier this week when a U.S. Navy vessel engaged an Iranian vessel that approached the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier strike group too closely, according to two U.S. officials speaking on condition of anonymity. This incident marks a significant escalation in the ongoing tensions between the United States and Iran.
Details of the Engagement
The U.S. Navy initially attempted to deter the Iranian vessel using its 5-inch, 54-caliber Mark-45 gun, a standard naval cannon employed by destroyers and cruisers since the 1970s. Multiple rounds were fired, but reportedly missed their target. It remains unclear whether these initial shots were intended as warning shots.
Following the unsuccessful gun fire, a helicopter armed with Hellfire missiles was deployed. The helicopter successfully struck the Iranian vessel with two Hellfire missiles. The current status of the Iranian ship and its crew is presently unknown.
Supporting Vessels and Regional Context
The USS Abraham Lincoln is currently operating in the Arabian Sea alongside the USS Spruance and USS Michael Murphy, both guided-missile destroyers. However, a total of six other guided-missile destroyers were also operating in the region as of last week, demonstrating a significant U.S. naval presence. The type of helicopter involved in the engagement is currently unconfirmed, but Navy Seahawk helicopters and Marine Corps Viper attack helicopters are both capable of carrying Hellfire missiles. The MH-60R Seahawk, in particular, is a versatile platform used for both anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare.
Official Response and Previous Incidents
U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) has yet to release an official statement regarding the incident. When contacted by CBS News, a defense official stated, “We have nothing for you on this.”
This incident is not isolated. The USS Abraham Lincoln is one of two American aircraft carriers deployed to the Middle East. The carrier strike group arrived in late January as part of a deployment described by former President Trump as an “armada.” In February, an Iranian Shahed-139 drone aggressively approached the USS Abraham Lincoln and was subsequently shot down by an American fighter jet, a precursor to the current conflict. Since the start of hostilities, CENTCOM reports that American forces have damaged or destroyed over 90 Iranian vessels.
Escalating Tensions
The engagement near the USS Abraham Lincoln underscores the increasingly volatile situation in the Arabian Sea and the potential for further escalation between the U.S. and Iran. The incident raises concerns about miscalculation and the risk of a wider conflict. Further updates will be provided as they become available.
