Ukraine Conflict: Deadly Strikes and Diplomatic Efforts
KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russia and Ukraine exchanged deadly strikes overnight and on Saturday morning, resulting in the deaths of 10 people and injuries to several dozen more, according to officials from both sides. These attacks occurred as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy travelled to Istanbul for crucial talks with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and a meeting with Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, the spiritual leader of Eastern Orthodox Christians.
“We are working to strengthen our partnership to ensure the real protection of lives, advance stability, and guarantee security in Europe and the Middle East. Joint efforts always yield the best results,” Zelenskyy stated in a post on Telegram following his arrival in Istanbul.
Escalating Attacks
The Ukrainian Air Force reported that Russia launched 286 drones at Ukraine overnight, successfully intercepting 260 of them. In the city of Nikopol, Dnipropetrovsk region, five civilians – three women and two men – were killed, and 19 others were wounded. The attack caused significant damage to local market stalls and a shop, according to regional military administration head Oleksandr Hanzha.
Further north, in the city of Sumy, near the Russian border, a strike injured 11 people. Residential areas were heavily impacted, with damage reported to homes, vehicles, and essential utility networks. Kyiv also experienced a drone strike, igniting a fire on the first floor of an office and warehouse building, though no casualties were reported.
Continued Hostilities and Counter-Strikes
In the partially occupied Donetsk region, a Russian drone strike struck a civilian vehicle on the Kostyantynivka–Druzhkivka road, killing one woman and injuring another, as reported by Serhiy Horbunov, head of the Kostyantynivka City Military Administration. The Russian Defense Ministry claimed its forces utilized “long-range air- and ground-based precision weapons, as well as strike drones” targeting unspecified “military-industrial and energy facilities” used by the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
Meanwhile, Leonid Pasechnik, the Russian-installed head of the occupied Luhansk region, alleged that Ukrainian forces targeted railroad infrastructure and private homes, resulting in the deaths of a family of three – a couple and their 8-year-old child.
The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) asserted that it employed drone strikes to disrupt production at a metallurgical plant in the Russian-occupied city of Alchevsk, Luhansk region. The SBU reported damage to blast furnaces, key production workshops, distillation columns, gas pipelines, and electrical substations powering the plant, which supplies Russia’s state tank and railroad car plant, Uralvagonzavod. Russian officials have yet to comment on these claims.
Drone Warfare and Regional Impacts
The Russian Defense Ministry stated that its military downed 85 Ukrainian drones over nine Russian regions, the annexed Crimea region, and the Black Sea overnight. In Russia’s Rostov region, bordering Ukraine, one person was killed and four were injured, according to Governor Yuri Slyusar. The attack ignited a fire at a warehouse facility and another on a foreign-flagged dry-cargo vessel several kilometers offshore.
In the Samara region’s city of Tolyatti, one person was wounded, and damage was reported to a residential building, including shattered windows. These events underscore the escalating nature of the conflict and its expanding geographical reach.
