TVA Nouvelle: Kharg Island in the Crosshairs as Gulf Tensions Rise

This island off the coast of Iran is firmly in the sights of the United States, which has threatened to strike its critical oil facilities should Tehran continue to block the Strait of Hormuz. US President Donald Trump announced on Friday that the American military had conducted an airstrike targeting military installations located on Kharg, in the northern Persian Gulf, off the Iranian coast.

Kharg Island is home to Iran’s main oil export terminal and is of crucial importance to the Iranian economy. According to a US military official, the operation targeted sites storing missiles and mines – resources that US officials believe were being used to block international shipping lanes in the Strait of Hormuz. The airstrikes reportedly spared oil infrastructure.

Strategic Importance of Kharg Island

Covering an area of 24 square kilometers (Montreal Island spans nearly 500 square kilometers), Kharg Island hosts facilities that processed approximately 90% of Iran’s crude oil exports before the war. The deep waters surrounding the island allow supertankers to dock, while the waters bordering the rest of the Iranian Gulf coast are shallow.

Iran, one of the world’s largest oil producers, has heavily relied on Kharg for exporting its oil by sea since the 1960s. The island boasts storage facilities and pipelines connecting to some of the country’s largest oil and gas fields. Disruption to its infrastructure would severely harm Iran and further impact the global energy market.

In recent years, the terminal had the capacity to simultaneously load ten supertankers destined for overseas transport.

Key Infrastructure and Economic Impact

Three major energy infrastructure sites operate on the island, including that of Falat Iran Oil Co., considered the country’s most important oil company. China has been the primary destination for these exports, purchasing the oil through a phantom fleet of tankers circumventing Western sanctions on Iranian oil. Oil exports to China accounted for approximately 6% of the Iranian economy and were equivalent to about half of the country’s total public spending. Iran supplied around 13% of China’s oil imports.

The last time Kharg Island was targeted by significant fire was during the Iran-Iraq War in the 1980s. At that time, the Iraqi army, under the command of Saddam Hussein, launched violent bombardments against the island’s oil infrastructure, causing significant damage. However, Iran managed to rebuild these facilities.

Recent Attacks and Potential Consequences

Following Friday’s US strikes, a senior official at Iran’s Oil Ministry stated that the attacks were extensive and destructive, adding that refinery workers reported nearly two hours of uninterrupted explosions that shook the island like an earthquake.

This official, who requested anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter, asserted that an attack on Kharg’s oil and gas infrastructure would immediately halt a large portion of Iranian oil exports. Source: The New York Times
