House Speaker Mike Johnson is navigating a delicate situation as he resists immediate calls for Representative Tony Gonzales to resign. The pressure stems from serious allegations of an affair with a district staffer who tragically died by suicide. Speaker Johnson maintains that investigations must conclude before any action is taken, even as calls for resignation grow from within his own party.

Speaker Johnson’s Response

Johnson acknowledged the accusations as “very serious” and has urged Gonzales to directly address his constituents. However, he emphasized the importance of allowing ongoing investigations – both in Texas and by the Office of Congressional Conduct – to run their course. He stated, “There are serious accusations, and it must be taken seriously… he’s got to address that with his constituents.”

The Allegations and Gonzales’s Denial

The allegations resurfaced as Gonzales faces a challenging primary election on March 3rd. He vehemently denies the affair, claiming he is the victim of blackmail. However, newly surfaced text messages, provided to CNN by the staffer’s husband, paint a different picture, revealing lewd exchanges and a request for a “sexy pic.”

Political Fallout and Calls for Resignation

Gonzales initially secured Speaker Johnson’s endorsement for reelection. However, the unfolding scandal has prompted calls for his resignation from fellow Republicans, including Representatives Lauren Boebert and Nancy Mace. Despite the gravity of the situation, some within the party acknowledge the precariousness of losing a member, especially given the House’s narrow Republican majority.

A Tight Majority in the House

With a historically slim margin, Speaker Johnson can afford to lose only one GOP vote on most measures. Adding to the complexity, there are currently two GOP vacancies and one Democratic vacancy. While special elections are scheduled to fill these seats, the situation remains fragile. Furthermore, Representative Neal Dunn is considering early retirement, potentially exacerbating the challenges.

Consistency in Approach

Johnson defended his approach, stating he has been “intellectually consistent” in allowing due process to unfold. He referenced the case of George Santos, arguing against his expulsion before a guilty verdict was reached. He believes setting accusations as the sole basis for removal would lead to widespread resignations and expulsions.

The Staffer’s Confession and Accusations of Blackmail

Attorney Bobby Barrera, representing Adrian Aviles, revealed that his client’s spouse, Regina Ann Santos-Aviles, confessed to the affair in June 2024 before her tragic death. Gonzales continues to dismiss the allegations as “personal smears” and accuses Aviles of attempted blackmail, a claim Barrera vehemently denies as “ridiculous.”
