Shah of Iran: The Looming Collapse of the Regime and the Path to a Democratic Future
Iran’s ruling regime is facing its most precarious moment, according to Prince Reza Pahlavi, a leading figure in the Iranian democratic opposition. Economic pressures and widespread anti-regime demonstrations are converging, creating a climate ripe for change. Pahlavi, the former crown prince, argues that escalating financial sanctions are exacerbating internal unrest and weakening the regime’s control.
A Regime on the Brink
“Clearly, the regime that is on its last leg and about to collapse would… be even more a challenge as a result of economic sanctions, and it would precipitate its downfall,” Pahlavi stated in an interview with FOX Business’ Maria Bartiromo. He believes the current situation represents a pivotal turning point, asserting that the regime is unlikely to voluntarily alter its course. “I doubt that this regime will ever come clean. It has always been this disingenuous and dishonest,” he added.
The Strategy for Change: Maximum Pressure & Support
Pahlavi’s strategy centers around a dual approach: “maximum support for the people parallel to maximum pressure on the regime.” He posits that this combination will encourage defections from within the government and facilitate a smooth transition following a collapse. He emphasizes a growing sense of unity among Iranians, recognizing the critical need for regime change.
The Iran Prosperity Project: Rebuilding the Economy
Looking beyond the immediate political crisis, Pahlavi is advocating for the “Iran Prosperity Project,” a comprehensive post-regime plan designed to revitalize the economy and attract Western investment. He estimates this could generate over $1 trillion in revenue for the American market within the first 10-15 years. This potential economic windfall is a key argument for a shift in Western policy.
A Call for Western Support
Pahlavi urges Western leaders to reconsider their approach, emphasizing the importance of trusting the Iranian people rather than propping up the current regime. He believes the outcome of this moment will determine whether Iran aligns with authoritarian forces or embraces a secular, democratic future. “Your best bet is to trust the Iranian people and not trust more this regime,” he stated.
He concludes with a stark warning: “Just push the regime over the cliff, because it’s on its way down, and not throw it yet again another lifeline.”
