Beyond foreign policy, Senator Kelly—who serves on the Senate Armed Services and Intelligence committees—raised alarms over the Trump administration’s latest funding requests. The administration is currently pushing for a staggering $1.5 trillion budget request for fiscal year 2027, alongside an additional $67 billion in supplemental funding.
Kelly criticized the request as “irresponsible,” noting that the U.S. is approaching a level of defense spending that rivals the combined spending of almost every other country on Earth. He lamented that previous “generational investments” in the Department of Defense were squandered, leading to what he describes as a request for a “blank check.”

Drawing on his unique background as a former astronaut and retired Navy captain, Kelly provided a technical critique of the proposed budget.
