Salah Sarsour: Milwaukee Mosque Leader Detained, Raising Concerns of Political Targeting
Milwaukee, WI – The detention of Salah Sarsour, president of Wisconsin’s largest mosque, the Islamic Society of Milwaukee, by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents has ignited a firestorm of controversy. Local officials and religious leaders are accusing the arrest of being motivated by Sarsour’s vocal criticism of Israel.
The Arrest and Allegations
On Monday, nearly a dozen ICE agents surrounded Sarsour’s car in Milwaukee immediately after he left his home, according to the Islamic Society of Milwaukee. Supporters are demanding his immediate release, arguing that the detention is a direct result of his outspoken views on the Palestinian narrative. His legal team contends that he is being targeted for his advocacy and a decades-old conviction from Israeli military courts.
Attorney Munjed Ahmad stated, “Our government should not be doing the bidding of a foreign government. There’s no question in my mind this is to stifle the discourse on the Palestinian narrative.” Sarsour, a Palestinian-born legal permanent resident, has lived in the U.S. for over 30 years and has no criminal record within the country.
Conflicting Accounts of Sarsour’s Past
While Sarsour’s attorneys maintain his record is clean in the U.S., the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) presents a different picture. Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis claims Sarsour was initially denied a visa due to a conviction for throwing Molotov cocktails at Israeli armed forces’ homes and attempting to illegally possess weapons and ammunition. However, Sarsour was later granted conditional residency in 1993 and a green card in 1998.
The DHS alleges Sarsour provided inaccurate information on his green card application, though specifics remain undisclosed. This case draws parallels to that of Mahmoud Khalil, a Columbia University activist facing deportation under similar claims of being a foreign policy threat.
Community Outcry and Support
Sarsour’s detention has sparked widespread outrage and a groundswell of support. At a packed news conference, supporters chanted for his release, highlighting his dedication to community service and recounting stories of his childhood experiences. Religious leaders from diverse backgrounds have also voiced their support, characterizing Sarsour as a valuable community member.
Rev. Paul D. Erickson, bishop of the Greater Milwaukee Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, stated, “This appears to be just the latest example of how this administration seeks to silence opposition and intimidate those who speak and act differently.” Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson also condemned the arrest, calling it “an outrage” and emphasizing Sarsour’s status as a legal permanent resident with no evidence of wrongdoing. He posted on X (formerly Twitter), “He is a legal permanent resident. There is no substantive evidence he has done anything wrong. This is another example of overreach and harm from the U.S. immigration authorities.”
Legal Battle and Future Outlook
Sarsour is currently being held at a county jail in Indiana. His attorneys have filed a petition seeking his release and are prepared to vigorously defend him against the allegations. “He is ready to fight tooth and nail to make sure that he’s not dragged through the mud,” Ahmad said. “He wants to stay in this country.”
The case is ongoing and continues to draw national attention, raising critical questions about immigration enforcement, political speech, and the potential for bias within the U.S. immigration system.
