Jared Kushner: A Complex Relationship with Donald Trump

The relationship between Jared Kushner and Donald Trump wasn’t always the close partnership it became. Once upon a time, it appears Trump harboured reservations about his daughter Ivanka’s future husband, even enlisting former ally Chris Christie to dig up potentially damaging information about the Kushner family. This surprising revelation came to light during an event at Harvard, as reported by the Daily Beast.

Trump’s Initial Opposition to the Marriage

Chris Christie, former Governor of New Jersey and leader of Trump’s 2016 transition team, recounted how Trump asked him to provide further information on the Kushner family while he was still a U.S. Attorney. This request came as Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner were planning their 2009 wedding. The root of Trump’s concern stemmed from Charles Kushner, Jared’s father, who had previously served 14 months in federal prison after being prosecuted by Christie for illegal campaign contributions, tax evasion, and witness tampering.

“It became clear to Donald Trump that they were going to get married,” Christie stated. “He was not thrilled, let’s say, about this, and I was still the prosecutor at the time… He asked me to go out to dinner, and he said, ‘Do you have anything more on the family, so I can break this up?’”

The Shadow of Charles Kushner’s Past

The concerns weren’t unfounded. Charles Kushner’s conviction involved a particularly disturbing act of witness tampering. He attempted to blackmail his own brother-in-law, William Schulder, who was cooperating with the investigation against him. This involved a plan to record a sexual encounter and send the tape to his sister. Christie himself described Charles Kushner’s actions as “one of the most loathsome, disgusting crimes” he prosecuted, as detailed in his 2019 memoir, “Let Me Finish.”

From Opposition to Partnership

Despite these initial reservations, the wedding between Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner proceeded in October 2009 at the Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey. Over time, Trump’s attitude towards Kushner dramatically shifted. Kushner became a trusted advisor, played a key role in Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign, served as a senior advisor during his administration, and became a father to three of Trump’s grandchildren.

Kushner’s Diplomatic Role

Trump increasingly viewed Kushner as a skilled diplomat, entrusting him with crucial roles in negotiating Middle East peace, the end of the Israel-Gaza conflict, and even attempting to mediate in Russia’s war against Ukraine. He was also dispatched to lead nuclear negotiations with Iranian officials. More recently, Charles Kushner has been nominated by Trump as the ambassador to France and Monaco.

A Shifting Dynamic with Chris Christie

The relationship between Trump and Christie also soured, reportedly due to Kushner’s influence. Christie alleges that Kushner pushed him out of the 2016 transition team, holding a grudge over past events. The rift deepened after Christie publicly criticized Trump’s claims of election fraud. A Trump administration official dismissed Christie’s claims, suggesting the President’s only concern was the Mar-a-Lago buffet line.

The story of Jared Kushner is a testament to the complexities of family, politics, and power. From a rocky start marked by distrust and attempts at intervention, Kushner rose to become a central figure in one of the most impactful presidencies in recent history.
