Rakhi Israni’s Campaign: A Deep Dive into Donations and Political Alignments

A new Democratic candidate in California’s 14th Congressional District, Rakhi Israni, has quickly become a focal point of scrutiny following a remarkably swift fundraising effort. Israni announced she raised $2 million in just the first two weeks of her campaign to challenge for Rep. Eric Swalwell’s seat, a district leaning strongly Democratic. However, the source of these funds and Israni’s past political contributions are raising significant questions.

From Fundraising Success to Controversial Donations

The rapid influx of cash isn’t the only aspect of Israni’s campaign drawing attention. Public records reveal a history of donations to far-right Republican candidates, sparking concerns about her political alignment. These donations include support for MAGA candidates, leaders of organizations like Christians United for Israel, anti-abortion advocates, and even controversial figures like Laura Loomer.

In a statement to The Intercept, Israni attempted to distance herself from these donations, stating, “Let me be unequivocal: I oppose Trump’s attacks on our democracy… I reject MAGA politics.” She claims her past contributions were not ideological endorsements, but rather broad engagement across the political spectrum.

Challenging a Field of Progressive Democrats

Israni is competing against a group of progressive Democrats, including state Sen. Aisha Wahab, Matt Ortega, Melissa Hernandez, and Abrar Qadir. Swalwell, who is seeking a run for California governor, has yet to endorse a candidate. The revelation of Israni’s past donations has prompted criticism from her opponents.

Matt Ortega sharply questioned Israni’s judgment, stating, “There is no version of this story where Rakhi Israni giving money to Laura Loomer is acceptable.” He highlighted Loomer’s controversial statements, including her Islamophobic rhetoric, as particularly troubling.

Aisha Wahab echoed these concerns, suggesting Israni’s views may be out of step with the district’s voters. “Our district wants and deserves a real Democrat… not someone bankrolling MAGA-extremists,” Wahab stated.

Ties to Hindu Nationalism and Pro-Israel Advocacy

Israni’s donation history also reveals a pattern of support for Hindu nationalism and pro-Israel candidates. She has contributed to organizations like the Hindu American PAC, where she serves on the board, and individuals aligned with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government. For example, she donated $4,200 to Republican Rich McCormick, who was endorsed by the Hindu American PAC.

Furthermore, Israni’s involvement with groups like the Hindu American Foundation and Sewa International USA, both linked to the Hindutva movement, has raised eyebrows. She even spoke on a panel discussing “Hinduphobia & Antisemitism” at a Hindu American Foundation conference.

The Caste Discrimination Debate

Israni previously clashed with Aisha Wahab over legislation in California that would have added caste-based discrimination to non-discrimination law. Israni testified against the bill, arguing it was an “unconstitutional denial of my community’s rights.” The bill was ultimately vetoed by Governor Gavin Newsom, following opposition from the Hindu American Foundation and coordinated efforts from major Democratic donors.

Looking Ahead: Donor Disclosure and Voter Scrutiny

Israni’s full list of campaign donors will be publicly disclosed in mid-April, leaving voters with limited time to review her financial backers before ballots are mailed out in May. As the race for Eric Swalwell’s seat intensifies, the scrutiny surrounding Israni’s past donations and political affiliations is likely to continue.
