Cyprus on High Alert Amidst US-Israel-Iran Tensions
The Turkish Cypriot cabinet convened an emergency meeting on Saturday, prompted by the escalating conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. ‘Prime Minister’ Unal Ustel’s office announced the meeting would focus on a comprehensive assessment of the war’s effects and interventions against Iran, specifically concerning national and regional security, as well as potential economic and energy-related risks.
Assessing Regional Risks and Security Measures
The cabinet’s agenda includes addressing the latest regional developments, potential security threats, and proactive measures to be implemented in response to various possible scenarios. The meeting commenced at 7:30 PM local time.
Foreign Ministry Monitoring and Travel Advisories
Simultaneously, the Turkish Cypriot ‘foreign ministry’ stated it is “closely and carefully” monitoring the situation in coordination with Turkey’s foreign ministry. A key recommendation was issued to Turkish Cypriots currently in Iran and the broader region: to remain in safe areas and diligently follow the guidance and warnings issued by local authorities.
Emergency Support for Citizens
To provide assistance, the ‘ministry’ established a 24-hour service line at (+90) 533 851 40 06. Turkish Cypriots in the region can also contact Turkish Cypriot representative offices in Abu Dhabi, Doha, Muscat, Kuwait, and Manama for emergency support. Currently, 37 Turkish Cypriots who were vacationing in Dubai have contacted the ‘ministry’, reporting they are “in good health” and their safety is not compromised. They are expected to return to Cyprus once flight suspensions are lifted.
Calls for Diplomacy and International Law
Earlier in the day, Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman emphasized the urgent need for a global order founded on rules, international law, and lasting peace achieved through diplomacy and legal frameworks. He stated that the region, the world, and civilization as a whole require such a system.
Potential for Increased Cypriot Involvement
There are indications that Turkish Cypriot involvement in these developments may be more significant than in previous regional conflicts. Notably, American officials visited Ercan (Tymbou) airport earlier this month to evaluate its capacity for “evacuations” should a wider regional conflict erupt. This suggests a potential role for Cyprus in facilitating the movement of personnel during a crisis.
