Cory Booker: From Newark’s Mayor to a Voice for Change

New Jersey Senator Cory Booker remains a beloved figure in Newark, even years after leaving the mayor’s office in 2013. Walking through his old neighborhood, he’s greeted with warm praise – “The best mayor ever!” – and heartfelt embraces. This enduring connection speaks volumes about his impact on the community that shaped him.

Early Life and Education

Born and raised in Harrington Park, New Jersey, to IBM executives, Booker’s path wasn’t always destined for politics. He excelled as a football player at Stanford University on a full scholarship, furthered his education as a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University (where our paths briefly crossed), and ultimately earned his law degree from Yale Law School. Yet, despite these opportunities, he felt a pull to return to Newark.

“This is the community that saw things in me I didn’t see in myself,” Booker reflects, highlighting the profound influence Newark had on his personal and professional development.

A Bold Start in Newark Politics

At just 29, Booker became the youngest person ever elected to the Newark City Council. However, he quickly encountered the frustrations of bureaucratic gridlock. Driven by a desire for tangible change, he famously pitched a tent outside a crime-ridden housing project in 1999, demanding increased police protection – a bold move that garnered attention and ultimately forced the city to act. This early demonstration of his commitment to direct action fueled his ambition for higher office.

Lessons Learned and Forged in ‘Brick City’

Booker’s 2002 mayoral campaign, documented in the Oscar-nominated film “Street Fight,” was a baptism by fire. Facing a formidable incumbent, Mayor Sharpe James, he endured a barrage of personal attacks. He recalls the experience with a wry laugh, stating, “If you were gonna have a spectacular failure, my best advice is to have a documentary team there to capture it!”

He draws parallels between the harsh tactics he faced and those employed by more recent political figures. “That’s why I sometimes look at Trump’s outrageousness and say, ‘You don’t know anything about hard-nose politics of insult,’” Booker asserts. “I was forged in Brick City! Newark is the toughest place in politics ever.”

A Powerful Voice in the Senate

After two terms as mayor, Booker was elected to the U.S. Senate, where he has continued to champion progressive causes. He gained national recognition for his record-breaking 25-hour and 5-minute speech on the Senate floor, passionately advocating for everyday Americans and challenging the Trump administration. He prepared for this marathon by fasting for three days and limiting fluids, enduring physical discomfort in his pursuit of making a moral statement.

Challenging the Status Quo

Booker isn’t afraid to challenge his own party, criticizing colleagues he deems “complicit” in systemic issues. He believes that addressing the root causes of problems requires confronting corruption and acknowledging that many current challenges predate the Trump presidency. He’s a vocal advocate for holding the executive branch accountable, particularly regarding U.S. involvement in international conflicts, arguing that the power to declare war rests solely with the Senate. He describes the current situation as a “good trouble” moment, calling for hearings and a reevaluation of presidential authority.

A Vision for the Future

Booker’s commitment to community and love extends beyond the political arena. He recently married Alexis Lewis in an interfaith ceremony, describing the journey to finding the right partner as one of self-discovery. He’s also looking ahead to 2028, stating his intention to remain actively involved in shaping the future of America. He envisions a nation that embraces its shared virtues and empowers ordinary citizens to achieve extraordinary things.

As expressed in his new book, “Stand,” Booker encourages Americans to stand together, reminding us that “We, the people, are the heroes this country needs.” He believes that love, sacrifice, service, kindness, and grace are the cornerstones of a thriving society.

Regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Booker emphasizes the need for a balanced approach, advocating for humanitarian aid to Gaza while simultaneously addressing settler violence in the West Bank. He believes that lasting security for both Israelis and Palestinians requires mutual autonomy.
