Stay ahead of the storm! CHEK News brings you the latest updates on a developing winter weather system impacting Vancouver Island. Environment Canada has issued a yellow warning for strong winds and a special weather statement regarding potential snowfall, urging residents to prepare for challenging conditions.

Strong Wind Warning for Greater Victoria & Surrounding Areas

A powerful cold front is sweeping across Vancouver Island, bringing with it westerly wind gusts of up to 90 km/h to Greater Victoria starting Wednesday night. Environment Canada’s notice, issued early Wednesday morning, warns that the most intense winds are expected this evening, but gusty conditions will persist through tonight and into Thursday. This winter storm warning includes Greater Victoria, the Malahat highway, and the Gulf Islands.

Residents are advised to secure loose objects, prepare for potential power outages, and exercise caution when travelling. Damage to property is possible given the strength of the anticipated winds. You can find detailed information and safety tips on the Environment Canada website.

Snowfall Potential Across Vancouver Island

Beyond the wind, a special weather statement covers all of Vancouver Island due to the possibility of snowfall. While trace amounts to 5 centimetres are expected Wednesday, particularly at higher elevations and inland areas, the Inland Vancouver Island region could see an additional 5 to 10 centimetres on high-elevation roads.

Freezing levels are low enough that precipitation may begin as wet snow or a mixture of rain and snow, especially for communities and roads at higher elevations and further inland. There’s even a slight risk of heavier precipitation briefly bringing wet snow down to sea level. This marks the third consecutive day Environment Canada has warned of potential snowfall, following a surprising snowfall in Port Alberni on Tuesday. Read more about the Port Alberni snowfall here.

Stay informed and prepared. Regular updates on weather warnings are available on the Environment Canada website.
